Bishop nixes Catholic campus address by Ted Kennedy’s widow
Quote:
Anna Maria College, a small Catholic institution outside Worcester, Massachusetts, has rescinded an invitation to Victoria Kennedy to be the school’s commencement speaker, at the prompting of Bishop Robert McManus.

Bishop McManus did not comment on the announcement, but a spokesman for the Worcester diocese pointed to the policy of the US bishops that “Catholic institutions should not be honoring Catholics who take positions publicly which are contrary to the Catholic faith’s most fundamental principles, particularly on the dignity of life from conception and the sanctity of marriage.”
….
She said: “This is a sad day for me and an even sadder one for the Church I love.”

And a comment:
Quote:
:!: But a happy day indeed for Catholics who have been waiting for their bishops to defend the faith we love. Kudos, Bishop McManus.

I'm glad that the bishop exercised his authority, but the statement of the college is odd. Do they mean if they were a big, well-endowed college (like Notre Dame) they wouldn't have had to listen to him?

Quote:
Its statement notes that “as a small, Catholic college that relies heavily on the good will of its relationship with the Bishop and the larger Catholic community, its options are limited.”

That's the way I read it. Sounds like a sulky 5-yearold who has been told he can't have candy before supper.

I note that the sister in charge of Emmanuel College [a small women's college near Boston said she can't believe that this would happen in Massachusetts in 2012. Also, Victoria will still address the commencement at Boston College. Cardinal O'Malley please take note.

Someone that knows Bishop D'Arcy in Fort Wayne ought to let him know this. While the head of the diocese there, he had Notre Dame and he protested. Stood there as Obama spoke. Cameras weren't focused on him but he turned his back to the podium along with 3000 others.
The Bishop wondered what happened to the Democratic party his parents joined when they got here from Ireland. We can all wonder too.
