Are many of our American friends planning on going to a rally for religious freedom-- and against the Obama mandate?
I was surprised to see that cities such as Boston and St. Louis (which I think of as very Catholic) were only added in the last few days.
I do hope lots of people turn out for these rallies.

http://standupforreligiousfreedom.com/

Quote:
The Nationwide Rally for Religious Freedom is being held Friday, March 23 at noon, local time, outside federal buildings, Congressional offices and historic sites across the country. The theme for the Rally is “Stand Up for Religious Freedom—Stop the HHS Mandate!”

Thousands of Americans of all faiths will be participating in these peaceful rallies, organized by the Pro-Life Action League and Citizens for a Pro-Life Society to oppose the new mandate from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that requires all employers provide free contraceptives, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs through their health plans, even in violation of their consciences.

I'm going to try to get to the one in DC. It's a couple stops down the metro from my work, but after taking today off for my Brother Knight's funeral, I have a lot of accumulated work to do.

Alma,
It was yesterday.

Here is an overview article: http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/large- ... across-u.s
I liked what Fr Guarnizo (yes, that Fr Guarnizo) had to say:
Quote:
Another Catholic priest, Fr. Marcel Guarnizo of the Archdiocese of Washington said at the D.C. rally that the mandate is not only “worse than Roe v. Wade” because it will directly coerce people of faith, but that this coercison is part and parcel of the administration’s ultimate goal.

“The one thing this anti-freedom of religion mandate is not about, is contraception,” said the priest, who noted that the country is already “flooded” with birth control.

“If you attempt to nationalize 1/6 of our economy - the health care sector - you need to get rid of intermediate structures in society, the churches and other institutions stand as a buffer zone between the state and the citizen. A lot of people don't like that,” he said.

If you are on Face Book, EWTN is posting photos from all around the country PLUS a beautiful, humbling one from Pakistan!

One of my favourite quotes:

“When the government decides that the First Amendment of the Constitution must be obliterated so that some may receive free non-life saving drugs, our entire nation has a serious problem. This is one hundred percent about freedom of religion and freedom of conscience, and it affects every citizen, regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof.”
~ Father Peter J. West, Vice President for Missions with Human Life International

Here in Omaha about 1,2000 people--not bad for a smaller city! Btw, one of the largest rallies ever held in Omaha--and just noted in passing by the local media (surprise, surpise!)

Hurray for Omaha! And I bet it was a peaceful rally, too. Did the media mention that?

In our parish this morning, and I suspect throughout our diocese, the homily was devoted to the problem. One priest is giving it at all the masses. I thought it was a good coverage of the problem. He got a standing ovation. [One of the rare times I think applause was appropriate.]

This wasn't a shocker, but I was still surprised to see some tv news stations not even mention it on the air.

Is that twelve thousand or twelve hundred? Kind of hard to tell.

Joe,

Now you've got my curiousity up. Why do you think it was appropriate in this case?

It showed support for the Bishops' stand.

Did you hear about the 30,000 on the Mall the next day?

I'm genuinely curious.

Yes, I did. When I log into my Yahoo email, I always see the news headlines. This one was right there and caught my eye:

http://news.yahoo.com/photos/atheists-u ... slideshow/
Quote:
Thousands of atheists, agnostics and other non-believers turned out in the US capital on Mar. 24 at the National Mall in Wash., D.C. to celebrate their rejection of the idea of God and to claim a bigger place in public life.

A bigger place? They already seem to have everybody jumping to remove prayers, monuments, plaques, crosses, etc, every time they open their mouths to threaten a lawsuit.

I did not, in fact I had no knowledge of the event till it was posted here. The news in Florida has been mostly about the Travon Matin shooting.

The news all over the planet has been about the Travon Matin shooting. (Though it has been mentioned that the North Koreans are going to fire a missile at us.)

Bob,

Not what you'd think. The gun argument here isn't so much about whether people should be permitted to own firearms (that's generally accepted) but which types of firearms. Generally, those in the media tend to be in favour of yet further restrictions.

In reporting the Martin killing the focus has been on the fact that Mr Martin was young, black and wearing a hoodie. There has also been some apparent incredulity at Mr Zimmerman not being charged by police. (Florida's controversial "Stand Your Ground" law has been discussed, usually in a disparaging manner, but with an apparent lack of awareness that in the US the discussion has been of whether it's applicable in this particular case.)

The Controversy is in the eye of the beholder. From my prospective it is a well written law that more closely defines my obligations when faced with eminent thread of deadly force.

Did Mr. Zimmerman's actions meet the criteria in the "Stand your ground law", that seems to be the question. So far three different police agency's (Local, state, and federal) are all investigating and Zimmerman has not been arrested. There is a Grand Jury scheduled for early April, the 9th I think, that will determine if he should be indicted I expect he will be if for no reason other then Public opinion. The trial will be difficult as he has already been convicted in the media, maybe they could move the trial to very rural Alaska so he has a chance of a fair trial.

Meanwhile our Governor has tasked the Lieutenant Governor to head a commission to Review the "stand your Ground Law" that IMO was a smart move, The Lt. Gov. is a Black woman and a retired Naval Officer and as smart as a whip, I'm interested in the review.

David L: Sorry--saw your message late. The Omaha rally was 1,200. I can count but sometimes I just can't type.
