Well, not a lot more. But soon... (ish)

Quote:
Among the investigations, commissioned by the Vatican, lies the credibility of the alleged apparitions of Our Lady, in the town of Medjugorje. 31 years ago, a group of seven people, said it physically saw the Virgin Mary. Since then, other claims have followed, drawing thousands of people to this town in Bosnia.

Since 2010, Benedict XVI established a Vatican commission, made up 17 experts, to look into the alleged apparitions and give an official explanation.

The commission's president is Italian Cardinal Camillo Ruini, who says he expects a conclusion soon.

James,

Do you have an opinion on it? To be honest, I'm not sure I understand the Marian apparitions or believe in them. I go back and forth. A friend who is quite devoted to our Lady (in fact it was a big reason she converted to Catholicism) once said she didn't care what the commission decided, she knew it was true and honestly, I don't get that.

Val,

I'm in two minds. For a Marian apparition to continue over such a long period of time is unheard of. But then, so what? Who are we to tell Our Lady when or how often to appear? Then there are the miracles. And then there is the very unsavoury character of many in the anti-Medjugorje crowd.

On balance, I think I'm more inclined to believe than not. But we don't have a firm answer on this. Until then, I await Rome's answer.

It's really a fascinating topic. There have been many people who have given witness to supernatural events which have occurred there. Can the devil produce "supernatural events"? Perhaps he can, but it doesn't necessarily make them "real". Are the supernatural events in Medjugorge produced by God or the devil? Let's look at the fruits of the events which have taken place for 31 years. Many people have been influenced in a positive way by the alleged apparitions. Yet if it is a hoax as some claim it would create divisions and scandal. Perhaps that makes it a goal for the devil's involvement. I have personally witnessed very strange phenomena there which I cannot explain or tell how it occurred. I have watched people who claimed to see incredible signs in the heavens, while I did not see them. I know a man who took a video of the sun pulsating. I have seen this video. Supernatural? Yes. Many many signs of supernatural events; but who or what caused them?

Messages for 31 years? Possible, yes, but practical for those who are trying to decide for themselves and haven't been there yet - somewhat doubtful. I have met with a couple of the visionaries and I was asked to sing there by the pastor of St. James church in Medjugore back in 1987 and again in 1988. I can tell you one thing which I witnessed personally. At the time of an alleged apparition I was standing outside of the friary where the Lady of Medjugore was to appear at a certain time, I think it was 4:30 pm. At one minute to go hundreds of birds were chirping away outside this building.

At 4:30 exactly, all the birds stopped singing and chirping and a silence fell upon about 2000 people who were waiting outside. You could have heard a pin drop. It stayed silent until the "apparition" was over. Now how do you explain that? Mass was scheduled for 5pm and I headed for the sacristy door where many tried to enter but were turned away. I was recognized and asked to enter where 50 or more priests were donning vestments. This was the feast of the Annunciation. I did sing the Gounod Ave Maria. I have a big opera styled voice. The church was full with about twenty thousand more people outside.

When I visited the "room of apparitions" later it had a sweet peaceful aura. Overall my experience was very positive and I did witness some very unusual events which happened with the sun; it seemed to come down to the earth similar to the Fatima experience. I cannot explain it but it happened to me on top of the Kricevac or "cross mountain". Others nearby were speaking French and were stunned and amazed to witness this event. I cannot explain how this happened. Signs of the supernatural? Very obvious and very apparent. Verification of it being caused by God? Well, I guess that's what we're waiting to find out.

The pilgrimage brought about several prayer groups back in the states which lasted for many years. For all of the souls converted and all of the positive fruits and documented miracles which have happened as a result, I cannot imagine how all this was brought about by demonic influences. That part makes no sense at all. One more thing. I did witness an apparition myself of the likeness of the "Lady of Medjugore" suspended in air above the left tower of St James Church. I cannot explain that either. I never saw so many people praying the rosary; thousands of people wherever you looked. I met people from at least 20 countries. In our group there was several Protestants who brought guitars and sang. Go figure.

There have been at least 61 Church investigated and approved medical cure miracles associated with Lourdes.

So now Heaven's priority is bird singing?

Why not Church approved medical miracles at Medjugorje?
I'm not talking about pilgrims's claims of miraculous cures. There are always thousands of those. I'm talking about miracles fully investigated and approved by the Church.

Until somebody tells me why not, I remain skeptical.

Healthy skepticism is good. If you were ever there though you might have had some experiences which spoke louder than just second hand info. I was merely relating what my experience was. You don't have to accept it, you don't have to believe it, you don't even have to read it. I am awaiting the official word from the magisterium as are others.

I think your comment is for the birds.

The most widely publicized healing is probably that of Rita Klaus of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA, a teacher and mother of three children. She was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 20, not long after her graduation. For 26 years, she suffered from multiple sclerosis. Neither doctors nor medicine were able to help her. By 1986, she had blurred vision and periodic incontinence and had to spend nearly all her waking hours in a wheelchair. As her leg muscles degenerated, her legs began to warp - inward at the knee, outward at the ankle. She could not even sit in her wheelchair without buckling her lower limbs into steel braces. She heard about Medjugorje in early 1986 an started praying to the Mother of God. On the evening of June 18 that year, while she was praying the rosary, she felt an electric jolt running through her entire body. The next morning, she could feel sensation in her legs again. That evening, she could walk without assistance. On the following day, she walked more than a mile to the house of her friend who told her about Medjugorje.

I personally know this woman, have spoken with her, and know that her miracle was real. You might be able to fake a lot of things, but straightening curved atrophied bones? Once again, there are many who doubt the authenticity of Medjugorge and I find no fault with them. There are at least six other miraculous healings which I know of that are associated with Medjugorge. How can one dismiss the fruits and ignore them? The fruits do not determine whether or not the shrine is legitimate but they lend lots of credibility to the claims. Let us wait for the determination of the committee formed by our current Pope. Until then remain skeptical if you wish.

Patience is needed; the Church moves very cautiously in these matters, rightfully so. Pray the truth, whatever it is, is revealed to the Church keeping in mind how difficult it can be both to prove and disprove these cases.

This is true.

One of the popes [Urban??] said that, if an unproven apparition asks you to do something good, you should do it. If the apparition is valid, you have followed instructions. If the apparition is not valid, you have still done something meritorious.

Here we are asked to Repent, Fast, Pray and do Penance. Pope John Paul commented that there is nothing wrong in doing that. Maybe if we had spent the last thirty years doing that, instead of arguing over the validity of the apparition, we would be in a better situation today.

I think the issue is not in the instructions given but in the official validation by the Church of a miraculous apparition. The instructions, while truly Catholic do not necessarily have had to come from a miraculous apparition.

The Medjugorge message is the same as Fatima. Fatima has been approved as have other shrines. Hopefully we will know more when the information is (leaked), I am sure. I think much good has come from the prayer groups which started as a result of pilgrims visiting Medjugorge. Whatever the Church decides is fine with me and with all respect due the original Bishop who initially was in favor of the events, but later changed his mind has to be an incredible precedent for the Magisterium. They took it out of the hands of the local Bishop and put it in several different commissions to further the research for the question of validity. There has to be good reasons for this even though we do not at this time know what they are. That, to me, is incredible and leads me to believe along with my personal experiences there that the old saying about the duck's abilities is true.

Understanding how slowly the Church moves in these matters, I hope I live long enough to see it resolved. Years ago someone gave me a rosary from Medjugorge but I haven't had it blessed yet, I keep with my several other "special" rosaries.
