Has anyone tried it? I am considering offering violin lessons over the 'web. Obviously it's not as good as in-person tuition, but better than DIY. Just wondering if anyone had experience from either perspective that they could offer me.

On Line Courses are pretty popular here in Florida, don't know how that would work with the Violin. On the plus side you could offer courses in English, American and French and any other languages you may speak.

I've taken several on-line courses through work, with the instructor visible over webcam and voice communication over our laptop headsets. As long as everyone's connection speed is adequate and everyone can be seen clearly, I would think it is an evolutionary idea to do this.

I took some classes online through an accredited college when I was unemployed and loved it. However, it is not for everyone.

I like online classes that don't involve real time lectures because my whole purpose (besides not having to drive) with taking online is to avoid listening to lectures. However, as pointed out the violin is different. I have not had personal experience with Skype but watched someone else talk to a friend that way. The picture was clear and the voice easy to understand. As Dean said, if the equipment is up to providing that sort of quality, I believe it would work well and possibly attract people. The only problem I see, and you would know if this is a problem, is that if you were working with beginning students are there not times when you need to physically help them with positioning their fingers on the strings and correctly posture, etc?

Val, I agree with you about online courses! There are already video lessons out there, but this would be personalised.

Touch is usually easiest, but it's possible to teach solely by demonstration/explanation. I was thinking mainly of older/adult students who would be able to copy/listen. It's not quite the same as being there, of course. There are 2 features I need to consider, though:
1) the camera has a mirroring effect so if I show you writing, it comes out backwards.
2) the sound doesn't work simultaneously in both directions, apparently.

That said, other musicians are already doing it. I guess you just have to be a bit creative. It must be better than a video because the student gets immediate feedback.





I think I need some real-life English teaching practice, but tutoring kids/teens is more my thing for general subjects. Just no maths.

Also... anyone willing to be a dummy? Factors like positioning camera, lighting, sound quality etc. and also me figuring out how to explain the real basics.

From what little experience I have with it, you can set Skype to a rear-view mirror mode, which generates a small window showing the image of yourself which is being sent to the person at the other end. That gives you the opportunity to figure out the best combination of camera position and your position.

Just occurred to me that you may want to do some comparison searching on the internet. I've seen many videos of keyboard players demonstrating how they play some song or another. There may be similar demonstrations out there by violin players (demonstrations, or perhaps submissions/portfolio/repertoire pieces) that would give you some ideas.
