My husband is being sent to Quantico, Virginia for a few days in February. How close is that to you? I may join him so we can do lunch. :)

Are you serious Bob? Thats a bummer. I thought Quantico was only 40 miles from D.C. and I thought she was close to D.C? I may stay home. No need for me to hang out with Marines all week. :(

Oh, snap! So close but maybe not enough.

It's about five hours for me. We are on I95, but on exit 73 in NC. It's 110 miles to the border and then 100 miles to the amusement park we often go to that's north of Richmond. That's about as far as we're willing to go on a day trip.

If you're going to be there for a few days, it might be fun to take some time in Washington together. There are two shrines almost walking distance from each other, plus St. Matthew's Cathedral, and of course other national monuments.

Rose isn't near DC.

I am. And I think Andrew (comc636 or whatever his username is) is about an hour west of here.

Plumee is near here too.

But I understand if we couldn't entertain you for a week. :)

I am not quite certain how many days yet. I will certainly let you know.

Hey, I'm all in!! I will hang out with you and Kym. We can go somewhere really cool for dinner that way my hubby can join us and put a face to the names of these virtual friends of mine.

Hey! Marines are good people, my nephew is one......but his wife might object, and anyway he's not at Quantico.

There's a nice little Turkish place my wife and I love around here, but it's about 50 minutes from Quantico.

OK, I will let you know if I decide to join him. We may have to find a place that is a little closer to us though. I dont know what his schedule or training will look like or anything like that.

Hmm... Turkish? Never had Turkish food before (AFAIK). 50 minutes in what direction?

I was stationed in Turkey for 4.5 years, not very far from Istanbul. Wonderful experience, the food is very good, somewhat exotic, lamb heavy, seafood and cheeses (goat) it is very similar in many ways to Greek food, yet different.

Foe example if you are familiar with Greek food in the US you would know that a Gyro is served on flat bread with Tsusuki (sp?) sauce. The Turkish comparison would be Doner Kabob served with a mildly spicy red sauce.

Reminds me of an interesting incident a few years back when I was covering an F1 race in Turkey. A race official and I were heading to Tuzla in a cab for dinner and midway decided on seafood as we heard the coastal town had some good offerings. After struggling to tell the driver, who spoke only Turkish, that we wanted to go to a place that served good seafood, I blurted out "fish" in desperation. To our surprise, the driver abruptly stopped his cab on the shoulder of the highway, reached for the glove compartment (I swear I thought he was reaching for a revolver to shoot us) and then whipped out a receipt book.

Apparently, "fish" in Turkish means "receipt' and he thought that for some reason we wanted to end our ride there and then. Relieved, I calmly took the receipt book, drew a fish on the cover and he broke in laughter when I made the international sign what we wanted to eat. We were then promptly taken to a beautiful coastal spot where we were spoilt for choice of seafood restaurants. After paying for the meal, I asked the cashier for "fish" and was duly given a receipt.

My wife is no fan of food particularly. For her, it is a tool to keep her from starving.

She looooooooooooves Turkish food, though. Which is why it's our go-to date place.

And while it's technically accurate to compare "gyro" to doner kebab, it's kind of like comparing chuck steak to filet tenderloin. Doner kebab is a delicacy, a treasure, an experience.

Now I'm hungry...

LOL... if Jeff would give up the name of the place, I might just do so! ;)

Larry, I had no idea you were close enough for it to be relevant.

The restaurant is Kazan in McLean, VA, which is very close to DC. Even from as close as Gettysburg, it's an hour and a half.

Oh! Within the beltway! That's definitely do-able -- I'll have to keep it in mind for a Saturday dinner, some week!
