Brain dead mom gives birth to twins while on life support
Quote:
In a rare procedure, a 26-year-old woman who had been declared brain dead gave birth to twins at Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, Mich.
...
Bolden's family asked doctors "to drop everything we could to save these babies. It wasn't that difficult a call," hospital spokesman Bruce Rossman said. "It required a lot of evaluations and discussions among our staff. They had to at least get to 24 weeks before we could consider delivery."
...
Dr. Cosmas Vandeven, who specializes in high-risk pregnancies at University of Michigan hospital, said Bolden's case is a "very exceptional scenario." He said an important ethical issue in cases like these is whether a brain-dead woman would suffer by being kept on a respirator and undergoing a C-section.

"Almost every parent would give their life for their child," Vandeven said. "But you need to get truly independent opinions: Are we sure we're not causing harm to the mom?"

Wonder how much a brain dead victim suffers when they cut out his organs for transplants?

Do they anesthetize? A little fentanyl goes a long way.

Did you read this?

Dad rescues ‘brain dead’ son from doctors wishing to harvest his organs – boy recovers completely

There have been a few stories like this lately on pro-life sites, and I am glad they are making people aware and realise they should not be so trusting when people are wanting to harvest their loved ones' organs.

This article was enough to make me turn to my husband and say, I'm no longer willing to be an organ donor."

http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/shock- ... y-experts/

Quote:
Byrne affirmed that giving pain medication to organ donors is routine. Doctors taking organs from brain-dead donors “have to paralyze them so they don’t move so when they cut into them to take organs, and when they paralyze them without anesthetics, their heart rate goes up and their blood pressure goes up,” he observed. “This is not something that happens to someone who’s truly dead.”

LifeSite has yet another story today about this topic.
http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/organ- ... n-new-pamp

So... are most Catholics NOT organ donors on your driving licenses then? I never thought about this, but from

viewtopic.php?f=76&t=56459&p=735605&hilit=organ+donation#p735605 and
http://catholiceducation.org/articles/m ... e0019.html

we should probably never consent to removing vital organs from a living person even if they are so-called brain dead?

I am proud to remain an organ donor.

Yes. I made the same decision long ago for the very same reason.

I am sure that the 'end of life' planning death panels that Obama has set up will push organ donation among other things. I suspect such a push could be stealthily included in a final directive. As such I would be wary of any ambiguous final directive as well. In my case I have chosen another that I trust to make any decisions rather than leave such on a piece of paper that can be 'interpreted' and or challenged in a court of morally devoid law.

Medical power of attorney is definitely the way to go. Appoint someone you trust to be able to make decisions according to the Church's teachings on End of Life issues, and of course bears you great love, affection, and wants your best interests. They can't turn off the tubes until that person says so.

If you have the above in place, being an organ donor is safe. They can't harvest the organs until the above is satisfied.

I would not let a few (and in the grand scheme of things, it is very few) incidents prevent us from saving the lives of other people when we can.
