Quote:

Singer’s debate opponent, Oxford philosophy professor John Finnis, responded that human rights are not created or conferred by government or by society; they are only recognized, he said—because the rights are prior to the authority of government.

Finnis objected to the use of the term “fetus” to refer to an unborn child, saying that the use of the term is a way of disguise the human identity of the child. A pregnant woman, he pointed out, invariably speaks of her “baby.”

Some commonsense from my fellow Australian, Finnis; the usual nonsense from Singer. (Is he still Australian? Or did he do a Rupert?)

He's quite right of course. Have you ever heard an expectant mother say "my foetus is kicking hard today"?

The C-fam link at the link above had some creepy stuff:
Quote:
We have to get rid of the idea of evil,” said Frances Kissling, an abortion rights advocate turned bioethics scholar, who also organized the conference.
Kissling shocked the audience in the last session by saying, “I don’t care how you accomplish it [the right to abortion], whether through a constitution, the UN, state laws or federals laws, or by the Taliban.”
:o :o :o

Grace,

I believe the Taliban are anti-abortion. So, I think, is al Qaeda.

Here is an amazing photo of a 10-week-old BABY.

And another one. They were taken by a med student in India. The mother had cancer of the womb, which was removed with the baby.

Yes, and it just makes that pair of quotes even weirder and more bizarre, doesn't it?
If Frances Kissling actually went to the Taliban to get them to "help" they'd probably "help" in an unexpected way. :P

Grace,

They would tell her that as a woman she has no right to speak in public. They would also demand to know why she isn't wearing a veil.

It seems Peter Singer is indeed still an Australian citizen. I wonder if we can just quietly cancel his passport. (It's been done at least once before to an undersirable while overseas.)

And stick the Americans with him?

Grace,

Why not? They seem happy enough with Rupert. Seriously though, they have, after all, given Singer a job at Princeton - not something to be sneezed at. He must be highly thought of.
