Quote:
A councillor has apologised for telling a disability charity "Disabled children cost the council too much money and should be put down".

Colin Brewer, 68, an independent member of Cornwall Council, made the comments to a Disability Cornwall member at a stall at County Hall in Truro in 2011.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cornwall-21594109

Quote:
Theresa Court, who was on the Disability Cornwall stall, said she was "absolutely horrified" when she heard the "depraved comment".

The Standards Committee ordered Councillor Brewer to make a formal written apology to the charity.

Councillor Brewer's apology letter read: "I am writing to offer my wholehearted apology for the offence these remarks have clearly caused.

"While I meant no offence by my remarks to you I can see, in retrospect, that they were ill-judged and insensitive and should not have been made at all."

Some "apology". Clearly, he just doesn't get it.

James,

The day is coming when the disabled will be left in fields to die. Dogs do return to their vomit. (Proverbs 26:11)

Perhaps immoral politicians should be "put down?" :tsk:

All,

Immoral is what really left me gobsmacked about this. Until I read this story I'd never heard of this local government nobody before, and I dare say I'll probably never hear of him again. But what a politician of the most repugnant kind. He has "apologised" because he thinks he has offended the electors; he simply has no idea that he was recommending something that is wrong, wrong, wrong.

Yes, James. I picked that up too. How many times, rather than admit they were wrong, does someone who puts forth a repugnant statement apologize for the offense given instead?

"I'm sorry if anyone is offended, but disabled children should be put down." Only a fool would be placated by that.

James,

Would I need to apologize for the offense if I agreed?

Although Brewer resigned from Cornwall Council, he was re-elected to represent Wadebridge East earlier this month in the local government elections which notoriously saw a large swing to the far Right.

James,

Explain to me again... .does far right mean in England what it means in the U.S. or how we refer to Hitler?

Val,

Similarly, far Left means the same thing everywhere. In the US it includes the Communist Party USA, Socialist Workers Party (United States) &c.

The following might help:

Quote:
In left-right politics, right-wing describes an outlook or specific position that accepts or supports social hierarchy or social inequality. Social hierarchy and social inequality is viewed by those affiliated with the Right as either inevitable, natural, normal, or desirable, whether it arises through traditional social differences or from competition in market economies. It typically accepts or justifies this position on the basis of natural law or tradition.

Quote:
In left-right politics, left-wing describes an outlook or specific position that seeks to justify social equality, often in opposition to social hierarchy and social inequality. It typically involves a concern for those in society who are perceived as disadvantaged relative to others and an assumption that there are unjustified inequalities that need to be reduced or abolished.

The classic diagram of political ideologies places liberals to the left and conservatives to the right, so "left-wing" refers to liberals.

How could " (KKK, Aryan Nation &c.) be conaidered conservative?

I recall that we discussed this in a high school history class, 60 + years ago, and concluded that it is a circle. Right and left meet at the extreme - e.g. Hitler and Stalin. As I recall both Hitler, and maybe Mussolini, claimed to be Socialists.

Joe,

I suppose it comes down to whether one wishes to be understood by one's interlocutor. In some things it is helpful to follow idiomatic usage.
