Quote:
Presenting himself as "an elderly man visiting his peers," Pope Benedict XVI visited a Rome residence for the elderly, urging the residents to see their age as a sign of God's blessing and urging society to value their presence and wisdom.

"Though I know the difficulties that come with being our age, I want to say, it's wonderful being old," the 85-year-old pope said Nov. 12 during a morning visit to the residence run by the lay Community of Sant'Egidio.

Quote:
Walking with his white-handled black cane, the pope visited several of the residents in their rooms and apartments before addressing them and members of Sant'Egidio in the garden...

The pope told those gathered at the residence on the Janiculum Hill that in the Bible a long life is considered a blessing from God, but often today society, which is "dominated by the logic of efficiency and profit, doesn't welcome it as such."

"I think we need a greater commitment, beginning with families and public institutions, to ensure the elderly can stay in their homes" and that they can pass on their wisdom to younger generations.

"The quality of a society or civilization can be judged by how it treats the elderly," he said.

Pope Benedict also insisted on recognition of the dignity and value of all human life, even when "it becomes fragile in the years of old age."

"One who makes room for the elderly, makes room for life," the pope said. "One who welcomes the elderly, welcomes life."

James, I second our Holy Father and not just because I'm in his age group. :)

I don't have anything to say. I just wanted to post in this section because in a few weeks I'll be 52 which is pretty well seasoned. I want to be like James and Mary. I think the Holy Father is more spry than I am.

James,

I never would have guessed because you are very well educated so I thought you were a little older (yes, I'm biased that way), in any case, if you've been posting here for a few years you probably weren't seasoned enough.

In fact, I'm not sure I believe you but then again, I've never known you to lie before and you would go to hell lying on a Catholic forum so I guess I have no choice but to accept what you're saying.

I agree with the Pope. I am 83, though I don't really feel that old.

The following is from a recent session of Sacred Space- The Irish Jesuits.

Now that I am old, the question is never far from my conscious mind: What awaits me when I have shuffled off this mortal coil? When I pass beyond that uncharted moment which is the act of dying, will I – miracle of miracles – find myself waking up?
Some, who have gone to the edge of what we call ‘life’ tell a consistent story. They sense themselves moving across a bridge towards a bright, beautiful place on the other side. They feel happy, buoyed up by a feeling of joy and anticipation. They feel free of their bodies, and that they are moving at incredible speed towards God, and being bathed in God’s love as though it were an avalanche of warm light. In that brightness nothing else matters, neither sins nor misfortunes nor worries nor sufferings. Their hearts and souls are filled with the presence of God’s glory.
Two of my friends have returned from the edge of death with a sense of disappointment, as though they were being dragged back from perfect happiness. Those who have been surprised in this way lose their fear of death. They know that there is limitless love and joy to look forward to, and that the last act of life can be beautiful. As the psalmist prays: Lord, I shall be filled, when I awake, with the sight of your glory! (see Psalm 73:24).
