Sorry if this is the wrong place for this. I was going through some old papers and found these two versions of the same lament, interesting POV in 1969, has it changed over the years? Meant to be somewhat humorous but thought provoking as well.
The Updated Church
Latin’s gone and Peace is too. Singin’ and shoutin’ from every pew. Altar’s turned around, Priest is too. Commentator’s yellin’ “Page 22!”. Communion rail’s goin’, stand up straight. Kneelin’ suddenly went outa date. Processions are formin’ in every aisle. Salvation’s organized single file. Listen to the Lector, hear how he reads. Pease stop rattlin’ them rosary Beads. Padre’s lookin puzzled, doesn’t know his part. Used to know the whole deal in Latin by heart. I hope all changes are just about done. That they don’t drop Bingo before I’ve won!
The Updated Church: A Conservative Lament
Latin’s gone; Penance is too. Singin’ and shoutin’ from every pew. Altar’s turned around; priest is too. Commentator’s yellin’ “Page 22!”. Communion Rails going, stand up straight; Kneeling – suddenly out of date. Processions are forming in every aisle. Rosary’s out, Psalms are in; Hardly ever hear a word about sin. Padre’s looking puzzled – doesn’t know his part; Used to know the whole deal in Latin by heart. I hope all changes are just about done; That they don’t drop bingo before I’ve won!
