An article in today's paper regarding a zoning change in a near-by city to allow people to keep chickens as pets.

Chickens could come to roost in Newport Beach
Quote:
...The property must be larger than 15,000 square feet and only two chickens and an unlimited number of unweaned offspring can be kept at a time, among other provisions. Roosters are not allowed....

I worked with a lot of chickens in earlier times, but we never had to wean one.

Were you ever able to get offspring without roosters?

I did a search and an unweaned animal is one who cannot feed themselves. But I don't know how you'd get the offspring without a rooster.

Well, I grew up on a farm and I can assure you that chicks can feed themselves as soon as they come out of the shell.

Yes, none of ours ever saw their mother.

It's tricky, they only allow two chickens at a time on the property and one of the hens may have to step out when the rooster exercises his visitation rights.
