Hello I have a question I am hoping some folks here might be able to answer.
Is it necessary to ween a pet from a certain food if you are just buying a different flavor but from the same brand?

I buy Taste of the Wild for my dog and I want to switch him from a salmon flavor to lamb. My wife is telling i should do it slowly and not just do a complete swap.

She's had more experience with pets but I want to see if there is a basis for this if its the same brand or if this just applies if you are switching brands

Thanks in advance

Depends on the dog. Some individuals have sensitive stomachs and will be ill if you change their food too quickly, other individuals can eat anything anytime and never have a problem.

The general advice to mix a bit of the new food with the old, increasing it gradually while gradually decreasing the old is usually good advice.

Dogs with sensitive stomachs can really make you wish you hadn't changed their food so fast!!

It should be okay if it's just a different flavour - though of course the dog might not like it. If you're switching brands, you need to do it gradually, and ESPECIALLY if switching from dry to wet or vice versa. Our dog couldn't even eat wet food (or real meat) without getting ill.

Chris, wouldn't that cause extreme stress for the dachshund? The poor guy would be thinking you're tempting him to commit cannibalism!
