(Btw we had hundreds of deaths in Europe for the unprecedented temps and the government just announced that we have enough natural gas till thursday, when power and heating outages may be scheduled. A prayer, will you?)

More like "hated it" rather than being surprised, if they were in town between last friday and saturday. We are totally, absolutely unprepared for snow and ice in Rome. Most roads were blocked, in addition to ice and snow, by fallen trees and broken branches. And they say it'll snow again next friday.

There was some item in the news here that one response of the mayor of Rome was to distribute 2000 shovels to the public and ask them to help clear the streets and sidewalks. Any truth to that?

Absolutely. I have been doing my part of shovelling myself! Although with my own shovel. Regular folks didn't have to wait for anyone from the government or the city to tell us what to do.

But it is true that such weather phenomena used to be so unusual here that it is really hard to organize an emergency plan. Maybe if they stopped believing Al Gore and gear up for tougher winters, we could get it right the 5th or 6th time around!

A friend just emailed this link to me. It looks very, very cold in these photos, Fabrizio. Hope you are staying warm.

Colosseum closes and drivers abandon cars as snow falls on Rome for the first time in 26 YEARS

Grace,

doing what we can as long as the government won't shut down gas pipelines and compatibly with what I can afford to pay! However, it is not the first time in 26 years that we have snow. We have been having it more or less regularly in the last few years. an inch, a couple inches tops. For a day. But only in 1985 were we snowed in like this time. Also, temps have been way under the seasonal average for an unordinate number of days now.
