Yesterday afternoon, I was microwaving a potato for lunch. The potato caught on fire, what would cause a potato to burst into flame in the microwave?

I have done this frequently, the microwave has a "Baked Potato" setting never a problem.

Any ideas?

Bob,

Check out a manual for a Panasonic microwave I found while searching the Internet for an answer to your question. Perhaps the potato was too dry.

Quote:
CAUTION: Cooking dry or old potatoes can cause fire.

Didn't seem dry, but that's the best answer I've heard yet.

Another food with which to use great care when cooking in a microwave is eggs.

When in high school, one of my granddaughter suffered severe burns on her face when the eggs she was microwaving exploded when she opened the door and started to remove them.

If there were bits of foil they would concentrate the microwave energy enough to get hot enough for a fire. Also, it's never a good idea to put "sealed foods" (in an airtight shell or casing; e.g., eggs in the shell, unpierced sausages or tubers, etc.) in a microwave oven. The casing will contain the moisture into the superheated stage where the item can explode.

I just realized that that post may come across as being disrespect. Absolutely not my intention. My apologies.

I scrubbed the potato with a vegetable brush and pierced the skin like always, I suspected a small piece of foil that may have stuck on the bottom, but found no evidence. I also suspect that maybe the sensor has gone bad.

Make sure there are enough holes punctured in the potato. That way the steam can get out otherwise it might explode. Don't leave it in too long or it could burn - obviously. Don't wrap it in foil. Sometimes potatoes you buy have dried out before they get to the market.
