In the real world i only attend sunday mass- i did nothing to help for the new year at the church but ate the cake offered all the same
Actually my bad habits can be summed up briefly by IanJM words-I think you are overwhelming us - I used to harass the poor village parish priest with all sorts of arguments /questions -when just out of school -but never lent any helping hand in parish activities
So my community experience is very bad-no one likes people who argue too much and dont work.

It was 38 degrees when I left this morning at 7:30 with an expected high of 55 (not unusual for us in winter) and expected low of thirty tonight and it's been in the thirties several times now and expected for a couple more days. It's the end of the world. It's not unheard of to have lows in the thirties but not ongoing like this. Sometimes people come here in winter thinking they're going to be soaking up the rays on the beach but it ain't so...this isn't Florida. The snow level yesterday was 2000 ft but we were fortunate not to have any precipitation but the "grapevine" was closed last night for ice. The grapevine basically links southern California to the central valley and it's often closed for snow or ice, gets very foggy as well.

I came from Kansas City to USMCRD, San Diego in January of 1957, expecting to bask in the balmy air of Southern California.

Standing on the Big Grinder in the 40ºƒ temperature of the pre-dawn darkness as the ocean breeze brought in the bone-chilling fog was as cold as I'd ever felt …

That is, until a month later, when we went to the rife range at Camp Matthews for M-1 qualifying!

There is nothing like spending an early-March week in the coastal hills to make you appreciate the relative warmth of March in San Diego!

Even though we had to walk back to San Diego from the mountains, it sure was good to be back down to sea level.

Those folks who insist it doesn't get cold in Southern California simply have never been there in winter!

This has to be Off Topic:

I thought my computer was more ancient than I am.
The noise and weird sounds of struggles is enough
to make me want to toss it in the trash...
It took ages to get the monitor going.
I wanted a new computer...the weird noises were too much for me.

I could no longer deal with it and surrendered completely.

My son-in-law said the monitor was dead, so he got a nice Dell monitor
for me and it worked splendidly... until last night.

I came along with a cup of coffee, set it down to my right and instantly
the face of the monitor toppled onto my knuckles...

I quickly turned off the computer, as I rescued my coffee which was quivering.

My son-in-law heard me calling him and he did his best to fix the monitor but it would not budge one iota..

The next day still no working monitor...until my granddaughter came home
from work. She took one look at it and said, "this needs tightening and also this."
These kids nowadays!

There's more...my computer is suddenly working incredibly good...!!! :o :o :o

Mary,

I'm glad that both you and the computer are in one piece.

Bright hot weather today....I think it's going to be 77 tomorrow for the high, of course, I have to go to Mass in my robe for Catholic Daughters and I've never once had the happiness of wearing the robe when it's cold. It's so darn hot...makes me particularly sympathetic to the priests who wear all that clothing on hot days.

Looks like we live a bit of a distance apart from one another. Currently it's 25 here. :(

You haven't worn out your slippers yet, have you? Sure hope your foot is totally healed by now.

Mary,

Oddly enough, that one slipper has a chunk of the bottom rubber torn out...don't know how as the other one is fine. In any case, thank you for inquiring and yes, my broken toe is pretty much all healed, thank God because I was such a baby about it.

It was quite hot, was wearing jeans under my robe rolled up to my thigh.....don't worry...not inappropriate for church as no one could see it. I remember one of our old associates always wore shorts under his cassock ...I asked him why he wore one when older priests don't seem to do that anymore and that was his explanation as to how it's not really that hot.

Val, sounds like good news for your injury. :)

btw, what is the reason you wear a robe at Mass?

Mary,

Every three months the members of our parish Catholic Daughter of the Americas (every parish group is called "court") attends Mass as one to try and draw attention to the organization to drum up membership. The officers wear their robes and I'm financial secretary. I can't even begin to understand why they elected me. The other officers are: Regent (the big boss), vice regent, recording secretary and Treasurer. We're the female equivalent of the Knights and were formed in 1908. From what I understand, our robes have changed little since then and my particular robe is decades old as we pass them down and alter them as necessary. In July, we'll have a regional Catholic Daughters Mass at the Cathedral...now that's really hot!

Andrew, since our choir was reshaped four years ago (when the former musical director left after 60 years), our choir no longer has robes and only wore them for special concerts, Easter and Christmas even when they did have robes. I don't know if there are plans that they every get robes again. Maybe I'm wrong as I didn't go to this years Christmas concert but I'm almost certain there were no robes at the ten o'clock Midnight Mass.

Muslims can enforce their rules in their homeland.Taking advantage of the british situation by having a "muslims only" area is asking for trouble. How would the British distinguish muslims from other asians who do not believe in violence.Id the birthday of mohammed is just over. The police is always armed and behind their tail when muslims take out processions in India
It is not a question of equality-it is a question of taking advantage of the situation

The weather here is nuts. Yesterday it was damp, cold and around 28 degrees. Today the sun is out, and by tomorrow the temperature could hit 60.

Andrew,

And to think I just looked at our weather and thought, "the high is only going to be 59...it's another cold day"

The weather report from Kansas (which is incidentally celebrating the 152nd anniversary of its birth as a State today)

77ºƒ and sunshine yesterday … 54ºƒ, cold rain and tornado watch today … snow and a high below freezing tomorrow!

66109 Weather Forecast

Yep! A typical January week in the hinterland!

Jim,

Is it normal to get that high this time of year or was that sort of a freakish thing? We really don't have much variability in our weather...nothing like that though there are times when it's 40 degrees colder at night then during the day. I think we're in the 70's tomorrow but that's normal for us to have that interspersed with cold spells or rain....our rain isn't usually cold but we do sometimes get snow at rather low elevations. My favorite is when there is snow in the mountains after a rainy day in the San Fernando Valley where I live and then we're surrounded by clear, beautiful vistas of the snow without ever having to be in it. I don't think it's been a good ski season yet.

No, it isn't normal, Val. Our normal highs in January are below 40ºƒ. The record high for the month is under 80ºƒ. But I don't know whether you'd call 'freakish' because that would actually pretty much describe winter weather around here in any year.

Val wrote:

We vary a bit more than you, Val. Here are some monthly temperatures extremes for the the state of Kansas. (Note that January extremes ranges from 88ºƒ down to -36ºƒ, a differential of 124 degrees!)

Temperature extremes in Kansas

Thus far, I haven't been able to find the 24-hour record temperature change for KC but I can tell you that I have experienced 24-hour temperature changes of more than 60ºƒ.

The official record high for January 28 was set yesterday, with a high of 76ºƒ (which broke the old record, set in 1917 by 11º). The official record low is -14ºƒ, set in 1997. So both the record high and the record low have been set in my lifetime.

Simon,

I'm on the side of morality. Persecuting Moslem people because they are Moslem is wrong. When Moslems persecute people (eg women, gays) they are doing wrong.

We must never lose sight of morality. We must remember that our Holy Mother the Church is our guide and teacher.

The alleged apparition that is allegedly appearing in a certain Bosnian town has allegedly reminded us that Moslems are also God's children.

I have posted this here in the hope that British readers can do something to help

http://www.forbes.com/2009/11/16/forbes ... -grab.html

Quote:
Last December, Nicholas Papa and Michael Cooper got an early Christmas present: A show cause notice from the Directorate of Enforcement (DoE). It carried two messages: Your home may soon be confiscated; you will be fined three times the land’s value.

Papa and Cooper (Nick and Mick, as they call themselves) moved to Goa from the UK nine years ago. In Aldona, a few kilometers from the beach, they bought a bungalow for Rs. 30 lakh and spent another Rs. 18 lakh renovating it, intending to retire there on Cooper’s pension fund. Under the stress of possibly losing their life savings and home, Cooper, 65, had a mental breakdown this January. "They want us to leave," says Papa, "but won't let us sell our house, won't let us gift it. We gave up everything to come here, and now we will lose it all."

Simon,

If you want members' attention on a subject, you are better off starting a new thread with a subject head that captures the essence of what you want to say. I doubt the Off-topic thread is going to be of much help to you.

This is serious! Perhaps you need to gain some weight, enough so the wind can't blow you away!!!

If you want members' attention on a subject, you are better off starting a new thread with a subject head that capture the essence of what you want to say. I doubt the Off-topic thread is going to be of much help to you

I find that I have a tendency to wander off the subject and land up hijacking the thread. For example what got me interested in posting about the British was the thread on the British census. I don't know if any American member -which are the majority here-would be really interested in things such a two centuries old British Cemetery and illegalities of Indian Law which have cost British investors a life time of savings. There are only a handful of British readers here.I get a sense of relief that just maybe someone will know .I am also too lazy to explore other forums as I know the members on this forum well.I feel that the sanctity of the forum must be respected and if I wander away from the main topic as a habit I am better posting it here. There is at least one member who visits this thread regularly and that is enough for me.

You wouldn't say that, Mary, if you knew how my waist size has expanded over the years! :tsk:

I'll never be blown away by wind though I do provide a great deal of wind resistance that makes walking difficult in the Santa Ana winds.

The Santa Ana winds and brush fires don't mix very well, either!

While I have not understood the details,Cardinal Mahoney has let down the Church in big way.To me this is a reminder that even the best make mistakes. It is also an inspiration to see that the posters on this forum are unshaken by the storm

I"m not sure why you're posting here and not in the thread about Cardinal Mahony but I for one, have been deeply shaken by the whole thing and he was my archbishop and the six hundred million settlement came from my donations along with insurance. I know in one place where land that was intended for a desperately needed new church was instead sold for the settlement. I despise him, I just can't help myself though I try really hard not to but he lied to us.

I told my friend I was going to get a gun before the gun laws turn against everyone with a mental illness to which she replied, "you can't get a gun, you can't even operate a chair" which I felt was quite unfair. Anyone could have ended up on their back with their entire recliner resting on them and their legs stuck in the leg rest thingy....I'm sure it's happened to most of you. I was rather afraid my skeleton would be found that way even though three friends have copies of my keys, I didn't have my cell phone on me. Fortunately, I'm very strong and was somehow able to life it off of me an extradite my rather oddly bruised legs.

:) :) :)
Val, not only have I tipped over my recliner, just this summer, I walked away from a bonfire to attend to a call of nature and being temporarily blinded by the firelight, walked off the edge of a ten-feet-high cliff into the creek!

I'm sure that, too, has happened to just about everyone who lingers here on the Off-Topic Thread! :P  :P

I don't have a dog in this fight … so I'll most likely finish Eliot Pattison's "Bone Rattler" and start on "Mandarin Gate" by the same author this evening and read about the Super Bowl in tomorrow morning's KC Star!

Well, that didn't happen to me (mainly because I can't nicely answer the call of nature in the outdoors) but I once tumbled down a ravine with my boyfriend in high school when we got lost during a school camp out. We were fortunate enough to have landed in poison ivy and I was fortunate enough to actually be allergic to it and not just have an ordinary reaction. I couldn't go to school for a week because I couldn't see clearly out of either swollen eye.

I forgot about the game as I don't follow football at all but I had to run to the grocery store and get something and it was worse than just before Christmas. I was mystified until I saw the cashiers were all (or mostly) wearing sports jerseys. I looked down the liquor aisle about to walk down there and out the other side and it was jammed! Obviously that was the main ingredient at everybody's party.

I've been thinking too much lately so I think I'll go to sleep early tonight.

But I think I'll have some tea first. Hmm, I think there's a few very small salt potatoes left.

I think I'll only have one or two; actually I think three would be ok.

Oh well, I think maybe I need to re-think this whole thinking thing. :tsk: :hold:
