Surely the Swiss Church can come up with approximately $75 USD a year to pay for the flame, even I could pay for that! I read the article but I'm not sure there isn't more to this story.

I haven't been able to find it on the internet, but I heard on the radio that the court had ruled in favor of the farmer and against the parish, but the diocese was going to assume the expense of keeping the flame burning.

I wonder if St. Hilarius is having a chuckle over this. :)

How can this be so given that the church in question was built between 1779 and 1781?

In English the saint in question is more usually known as St Hilary of Poitiers. He is a Doctor of the Church and was a great defender of Catholic orthodoxy against the Arian heresy.

I suppose that the flame was moved from an old St. Hilarius church building to a new one.

In a poorly translated (Google) history it seems there may have been a chapel there before the church was built, could not find a clear answer.
