Stop buying Citgo gas and maybe he'll be less able to buy the next election.

I avoid Citgo on basic principles.

But did Chavez buy this election? I know little of Venezuelan politics.

Jeff,

The information available so far suggests the election was fair.

Quote:
Election experts say the electronic voting system is reliable and all candidates have signed a pledge to accept the result.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-10-07/v ... ez/4300218

Quote:
...near-complete official results showed Mr Chavez winning 54.42 per cent of votes compared to 44.97 percent for opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.

Quote:
At home, casting himself as an heir to independence hero Simon Bolivar, Mr Chavez has poured billions of oil revenues into anti-poverty programs, and skilfully used his humble roots and folksy oratory to build a close connection with the masses.

While that connection ensured his re-election, the opposition's big share of the vote reflected a real and growing anger at Mr Chavez's failure to fix basic problems such as violent crime, potholed roads, electricity blackouts and entrenched corruption at all levels.

James,

Sort of "deja vu" don't you think? Of course living in Perth, I would not know, but from what I see on the news. Slipper, Thompson, sexist parliament, Alan Jones. Wonder what they see on the news in Venezuela?

By the way, is that delightful member that represents your constituency, and in my book would make a wonderful leader of the Labor party, about to become a Mum again? Seeing the TV shots of yesterday's debacle it would appear so. No I'm not blaming you

Peter

To a great many citizens, Socialism represents a very tempting solution to their station. Due to the "free" services provided by Socialist governments, services which have grown, are growing at a phenomenal pace in Western countries, an ever increasing population is lured into supporting such governments. The US is clearly on that road and we could, in a single election find ourselves in a similar political climate. Don't waste time condemning Chavez, be active in preventing a similar fate here.

In another thread we are getting tied up in speculative minutia and overlooking the "Big Picture" regarding the outcome of our own upcoming election; potential loss of Religious Freedom, potential loss of Financial Freedom, potential loss of many personal Freedoms and Rights, government mandate of acceptance of so-called "Same Sex Marriages and the growth of taxpayer funded contraception and abortion.

I don't recall the name but a person who was introduced as an expert of some sort, was on the Dennis Prager radio show yesterday and among other things, said that private television and radio stations who criticized Chavez had been confiscated or disbanded along the way.

The opposition candidate was given three minutes air time and Chavez frequently (possibly every day..don't remember) spoke for three hours at a time. I imagine there were similar restrictions on newspapers but don't recall. It was, after all, yesterday and I can't be expected to remember that long ago.

First I've heard of it.

Still no criminal charges against Thompson. No idea what was in Slipper's text messages, but it must be pretty sick if it can't be reported. A pity; he was a very good Speaker. The less said about Alan Jones the better.

The irony of attacking a supposed misogynist in the context of a speech defending a known misogynist seems to have been lost on many. Certainly, none of the many foreign reports picked up on it.

Fair Work Australia have now launched civil proceedings to recover funds paid to whores. (IMO, at least some will probably be found to be statute barred.)

Thanks to the minions of Citizen Murdoch I now have. More to do with typically homosexual views of women ("fish" jokes &c.) than sexism in the usual sense. I still think Slipper made an excellent Speaker of the House. Sad to see him go.

Controversial broadcaster Alan Jones has been ordered to undergo basic journalism training by Australia's media watchdog.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) says Jones will have to undertake training on "factual accuracy and significant viewpoints" as part of measures agreed with his station 2GB.

Slipper 'conspiracy' likened to Australian Watergate

Let the games begin!

Quote:
Labor has stepped up its attack on the Coalition amid the fallout from the failed sexual harassment case against Peter Slipper, describing it as a "conspiracy of enormous proportions".

The Federal Court yesterday dismissed the case brought against the former parliamentary speaker by one of his staff members, James Ashby, declaring it was an abuse of process designed to cause "significant public, reputational and political damage".

Justice Steven Rares believes the predominant purpose of the case was to further the political interests of the Liberal National Party (LNP) and former Howard government minister Mal Brough, who has been preselected as the Coalition's candidate in Mr Slipper's Sunshine Coast electorate of Fisher.

Government frontbenchers are demanding Opposition Leader Tony Abbott disendorse Mr Brough and make a detailed statement about what involvement the Coalition had in the court case.

"This is a conspiracy of enormous proportions, and Mr Abbott will hope that it simply blows away and then he can get on to his next smear campaign," Labor frontbencher Craig Emerson told AM.

"Mr Abbott will probably want to continue circling the earth and not land and answer these basic questions: What did he know about this? What does he mean by 'no specific knowledge'?"

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-12-13/l ... cy/4425520

Quote:
In May, Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr came under fire for suggesting Mr Ashby was "more rehearsed than a kabuki actor". Today he has described that as a "modest understatement".

"This has been a conspiracy, it has been a set up, and as the judge found, it was all directed at changing the government of Australia," he told ABC Radio National.

The Venezuelan Catholic Church has said that delaying President Hugo Chavez's inauguration would be a "morally unacceptable" violation of the constitution.

The head of the Venezuelan Conference of Bishops, Diego Padron, said Mr Chavez must attend his inauguration when his term ends on 10 January.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-20938700

Quote:
Monsignor Diego Padron said the Venezuelan constitution is very clear.

"On 10 January the current presidential term ends and a new one begins. Otherwise the 7 October vote would make no sense," he said.

"It is not our job to intervene publically, but in this case the good of the country and the defence of ethics is at stake. To alter the constitution to attain a political objective is morally unacceptable," added Monsignor Padron.

He also criticised the lack of reliable information on the president's health.

"Despite the 25 official statements on his health, the head of state has not yet been seen by a Venezuelan doctor. The government has not told the people all the truth."
