Police have warned that Apple's glitch-filled Maps app could get someone killed, after motorists looking for the Victorian city of Mildura were instead guided to a wilderness area.

Apple replaced Google Maps with its own maps app in the iPhone's latest software upgrade.

The app has been widely panned around the world for its poor map data, which shows numerous mistakes.

Victoria Police say that in the past two months they have rescued six people who were lost in the Murray Sunset National Park while trying to get to Mildura - more than 70km away.

But they were not in as much trouble as those shipwreck survivors who were directing their lifeboats to that non-existant South Pacific island.

The Apple maps problem has gotten wide publicity. These folks must have had their heads in the proverbial sand.

Google has released a new Maps app for iPhone users to replace a glitch-ridden Apple program panned for omitting key landmarks and cities and failing correctly to identify locations.

The company has promised an "entirely new" experience with its Google Maps app, which includes local search functions, voice-guided directions and Street View images of places and even the inside of some 100,000 businesses.

While Apple Maps offered soaring 'flyover' views of major cities, it had no public transit directions, limited traffic information, and obvious mistakes such as putting one city in the middle of the ocean.

Please tell me that the city was New York, and that they are still working on making that happen.

Thanks.

Lou,

Rising ocean levels due to global warming mean that NY is now in the Atlantic. It will presently change its name to "New Atlantis".

More seriously,

Quote:
An entire city is in the ocean, a farm has been labelled as an airport, highways end in the middle of nowhere and a hospital now covers the entire centre of British city Stratford-upon-Avon...

Pictures showed the Norwegian town of Leknes in the Norwegian sea...

A man caught driving the wrong way on a Victorian highway has told police he was following instructions from his GPS unit.

The 37-year-old was pulled over after travelling down the Hume Freeway between Clonbinane and Broadford, in central Victoria, around 4:30am AEDT.

The New South Wales man told police he had referred to his GPS for the 20-kilometre journey.

He said he was unconcerned by passing traffic because he thought he was on a dual carriageway.
