A friend send me this. I did not write it, but I wish I had:

What is a Veteran?

A Veteran is someone who---whether active duty; discharged; retired or reserve--who at one point is his or her life wrote a blank check payable to "The United States of America" for an amound of "up to, and including a life".

Blessings to all who served! Happy Veteran's Day! (Yes, I know I'm early!)

I've wondered if I could be considered a "veteran".

I was in the Army in Germany during 1979-82, followed by a year and four months in Washington.
This was the time of the Iranian student stupids taking our embassy hostage, of Brechnev losing his marbles so you wondered if he'd push the nuclear button thinking he was flushing the toilet.
I never saw combat but I was 45 miles from the Czech border in the lowlands where the tanks would roll if it started. ( We had 250 tanks on our post and our "sister" post eight miles away had nuclear artillery shells. We weren't there for hurricane relief. )

So by the above definition, I guess I'm a veteran, although I won't get a V license plate. I figure that's for combatants.

Norman,

You are a veteran by any measure I know to determine that. The VA requires six months of honorable service

Thank you, but don't forget Jim and David and Bill Hatfield and all the others. I believe there are even a few of the ladies here that are veterans, Nurse Nell for one.

I offer my gratitude and thanks for my fellow Veterans who served their country in the military whether stateside or overseas. Norman, at the time I too, was in Germany when that incident occured. Our hospital unit was place on full alert. We thought we were going to the Czech border too.

Did the person who did it live to spit again? You don't have to answer that.

I'm sure he had a long and I hope painful visit with his orthodontist.

The funny part of it was immediately after it happened (at San Francisco Int'l Airport), a police officer came over to me and I was thinking oh nut I'm going to jail. The officer very politely asked me if I was okay? Did my hand need first aid, when I said no; he told me to make sure I didn't miss my plane, and that he would take care of the trash.

Great ending. Thanks for sharing that Bob.
