There are a couple dozen bottles of water in the trunk of my wife's car. Someone suggested that the water may be contaminated by the effect of heat on the plastic. Has anyone information on this?

In Afghanistan that was a regular concern. Living in tents, our water supply was mostly from pallets of bottled water, sometimes left under sheds, but mostly out in the open, exposed to the elements - sun and extreme heat in the summer months. Yes, the plastic can break down and contaminate the water.

The main chemical culprit is Bisphenol A (BPA), the heat in the trunk could increase the amount and speed of the leaching process.

Thanks. It sounds safest to dump it. - Joe

Joe, yes , I would dump it. I've read that it is also not good to microwave food in plastic containers. I also remembering hearing some time ago that Pepsi/Cola type stuff turns downright poisonous if allowed to warm up in plastic bottles.

Depends on how hot and how long.

Afghanistan summer heat is a bit hotter than American fall heat.

According to this, you're OK unless the recycling number is 3 or 7 (contains BPA). But if it actually tastes like plastic, I still wouldn't drink it.
