Hooray! God bless this day!
Bishop Sample, currently of Marquette, bravely promotes authentic liturgical music in his diocese. He is highly knowledgeable and sophisticated on the subject of liturgical music and knows and understands its current dreadful state. He will be the next Archbishop of Portland? - how wonderful!
Do you know what this good news can mean? It could mean the end of the happy-clappy, guitar & drum, four-hymn sandwiches of the English Novus Ordo, which have been manufactured these many years right there in Portland and spread to infect celebrations of the Mass in English all over the world.
It's time the Mass in English used properly chanted Propers - the Entrance Antiphon, the Gospel Acclamation, the Responsorial Psalm, the Offertory and Communion antiphons. The Propers are the proper prayers and they are integral to the Mass. Without them the Mass seems incomplete. They've been set to chant music in English by many reputable composers, but choir directors who subscribe to Oregon Catholic Press continue to ignore them, because of "Option 4" in GIRM48.
With Archbishop Sample to oversee OCP hymnals and approve or disapprove of their contents, will we be finally rid of “Gather Us In”, "Table of Plenty," “Anthem,” “The Call” as gathering hymns; "Let There be Peace On Earth", "Lord of the Dance" for Offertory; "We Remember" for Communion; "Rain Down” for Baptism; and "Be not Afraid" and "Here, I am Lord" for funerals? Will it be the end of Haugen-Haas-Joncas-St. Louis Jesuits-Manalo-Farrell and the 70′s protestant/charismatic saccharine liturgical songs?
Let's hope so. With Archbishop Sample right where those cheeses originate, we may yet get to see changes!
