Watching Leo go about his daily business, I often wondered how this indoor-outdoor rodent killer would buy the farm. I never in my wildest imagination thought I would back over him with the truck. But that is what happened today. My 10 year-old daughter Regina was with me. I saw him on the side of the driveway as I slowly backed out the truck to take Regina to her game, and then he disappeared. He had never gone under the van when it was moving before. The howl will forever remain with me and Regina. He died within seconds, thanks be to God.

He was a gentle giant, putting up with all of the hair and ear pulling and "riding" on him from the toddlers. But he was ruthless with the rodents that dared step on the property. Cut down in his prime at only 8 years old, he is buried in his favorite spot, under the burning bush, where he would lie in wait to attack the mailman's shoes. There will always be flowers over his burial spot.

He is the last cat we will allow outdoors because of the shortened life expectancy and our constant battle with fleas.

And he will never be replaced in our hearts.

Please pray for the healing of our family, especially to overcome that sound and the guilt I feel for his loss.

Thank you.

I am so sorry this happened to you. There is no one to blame so don't feel guilty. It was an accident. I know you feel badly for you are a good person, but know that these feelings are normal and they will pass. I believe God has a plan for all His creatures. Have faith that this incident is part of God's plan for all of us. Prayers for healing.

How devastating for all of you especially you and Regina, I will offer my prayers for all of you and especially for you to be at peace about it, as it was an accident and you drove carefully.

I am so sorry for your pain and loss and that of your family. I recently lost a beloved pet as well.

It makes no sense, it hurts, but it hurts because we love. If we didn't hurt, it would have been because we didn't love. For the time he was with you, he was loved.

My prayers for you and your family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Our pets are tiny reflections of God's unconditional love for us. I live in Michigan too and I know the shelters are overwhelmed with very nice cats. Many trained, vetted and well mannered. Again, so sorry.

Thank you all for your prayers and helpful comments. I have not had much sleep over the last 2 days, because the silence presses in and I can't help but think of what happened, the howls and the suffering. I continue to pray that the calling to mind of the memories happens with much less frequency and pray that Regina heals quickly as well.
