Showtime has ordered "The Vatican," a contemporary drama thriller centered around the Catholic church, the network announced Thursday.

"The Vatican" is the cable network's first pilot order for 2013, written by Oscar-nominated Paul Attanasio and set to be directed by Sir Ridley Scott. The project will be Scott's television directorial debut.

According to Showtime, the drama focuses on "spirituality, power and politics –- set against the modern-day political machinations within the Catholic church. The series will explore the relationships and rivalries as well as the mysteries and miracles behind one of the world's most hidden institutions."

Anti-Catholic? We'll see.

I am both intrigued and very very worried simultaneously.

I'm sticking with very, very worried. First of all, its rather rare that I ever read anything in the secular press that indicates any understanding of how "the Vatican" works or even what it means to say "the Vatican".

I will check it out.

I have no doubt that it will be dramatic, entertaining, well written, and well acted. Factual? --That is the question.

I watched the Borgia's and was entertained.

Handel's Zadok the Priest sung at Alexander VI's coronation? Music by Thomas Tallis being sung at Lucrezia's wedding? Yeah, "entertaining".

I'm already bracing for the two strongest qualities of modern-day Hollywood productions of the Church: 1) stupid 2) pathetic.

Paul Attanasio was one of the producers of the TV series House. I was able to catch a number of episodes of that series and was quite intrigued at the way it treated the question of religion. The episode called "Unfaithful" was incredibly moving and about the only thing I saw come out of "Hollywood" that showed a Catholic priest being falsely accused of molesting an adolescent boy. The scene where the boy begged the priest's forgiveness made me cry, so poignant was it.

Don't know what that means for this upcoming series...
