The recent thread about the 70th Anniversary of Casablanca got me to thinking about classic movies.

I have seen Casablanca, but there are a number of classics that I have missed along the way. The other day AMC was playing Gone With The Wind. I had never seen the whole flick so I started to watch it. Sorry but it didn't hold my interest, so it is still on my unseen list.

A few other I've not seen:

    Birth of a Nation
    ET
    Psycho
    Jaws
    Pulp Fiction
    Taxi Driver
    Notorious
The Adventures of Robin Hood (38)
    All About Eve
    Easy Rider
    Annie Hall
    City Lights
    Nashville

Any Star Wars after the first one.
Any Indiana Jones after the first one.

And more that I haven't thought of...

The funny thing is, I've seen so many clips of some of them, that I almost feel like I have seen the movie.

I guess it depends on whose list of top films. The AMC top 100 is here:
http://movies.amctv.com/movie-guide/tim-dirks-top-100.php
Of the first 50, I must admit I have seen almost all of them, except: High Noon (35), Shane (47), Sunset Boulevard (49).

I haven't seen any of the movies on your list with the exception of Annie Hall, even Star Wars. I also won't watch violent movies so that cuts out Pulp Fiction. On the other hand, the Godfather movies were an exception to my no violence rule because I enjoyed them otherwise, just closed my eyes before any violence started. I have see Gone with the Wind, maybe you have to be a girl to enjoy it as besides being a historical movie (the scenes of the vast numbers of dead and dying in Atlanta and then subsequent burning were quite compelling) it is also a romance.

Of your list, I would suggest, Notorious may be the most entertaining at this point in time.

I've seen the two westerns, but not Sunset Boulevard.

I was very surprised by Sunset Boulevard myself.

Have you seen To Kill a Mockingbird?

I would suggest you try again at Gone with the Wind. There's a lot of Catholic culture and Catholic themes buried in there. It's interesting just from that standpoint.

The other day, AMC and TCM were showing GWTW
at the same time !
Yes, you read that correctly. I've never seen this happen before.

AMC started the movie some time before TCM.

Of course, TCM showed it without commercials. That might have made a difference to you, David.
GWTW is all about mood, and it's hard to keep the mood when you watch ten minutes of commercials every twenty-five minutes.

Television must drive movie directors crazy. :( []

Wait, I lied, I didn't notice Jaws on there and I more or less saw it between flipping channels.

I love a good western and two classics I recommend are The Outlaw Josey Wales and Unforgiven. Both are excellent Clint Eastwood flicks.

I have been enjoying these (classic westerns - particularly with the Duke and Clint) lately. I have seen these you mentioned, and like them! Would you recomend Shane and High Noon?

Most definitely (the two you mentioned), along with these:

The Searchers
Red River
The Wild Bunch
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
Stagecoach
Cat Ballou

There are so many more that I like as well.

There are so many more that I like as well. Special mentions would go to the movie Dances with Wolves and the Lonesome Dove TV mini-series with Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones which I thought was excellent. I read the book by Larry McMurtry and this adaptation nailed it!

High Noon is definitely a Classic, I had to look Shane up as I didn't remember it. I saw it but apparently was unimpressed.

Tom Sellick has some pretty good westerns out.

You have not lived until you've seen:

E.T.
Jaws
Pulp Fiction - Back in Theaters one night December 6th! - Best movie of the 90s.

Also, no Indiana Jones since Raiders? You'll absolutely love Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, about the search for the Holy Grail w Sean Connery.

Perry,

I agree with Searchers and Stagecoach! I need to check out Red River and Wild Bunch. Cat Ballou is not on the AMC 100 list. Thanks for the recomendations.

Brandon,

I am a sucker for Quentin Tarantino films, but they are very violent. I am also quite surprised that they ranked Pulp 11! I have to watch these by myself and without the family.

There are some pretty amazing movies on the list below Pulp, which don’t hinge on violence and actually have a morale thread, which Pulp clearly lacks. I am confident that the USCCB rates this one as Offensive. From a creativity and artistic perspective I think it belongs in the top 100, but for example the Treasure of Sierra Madre, in my opinion is a better film (I would actually put this in the top 10). Have you seen Treasure?

Perry,

I think The Wild Bunch is generally regarded as the best Western ever, even by people who don't much like the work of Sam Peckinpah. Certainly, I don't recall having seen any other Western mentioned in a flim studies course. (Although the Magnificent Seven is never mentioned, Kurosawa's Seven Samurai invariably is.)

Hi David,

My burning question is: have you seen all of the great classic musicals?

Squirt,

Well, I'm not David but I've actually seen many of those....guess I'm more a musical person than film.

The King and I and West Side Story are among my favorites!

Good question! I think I have seen most of these. I am really surprised that the Fiddler on the Roof is not on that list! I love that movie. I especially love the relationship Topol’s character has with God. He truly has a relationship with God, and I have not seen this depicted so beautifully in any other movie I have ever seen.

Nope. I've seen most, but not all.

Ones I've missed:
  • Cabaret
  • Mary Poppins
  • Chicago
  • Top Hat
  • Funny Girl
  • The Band Wagon
  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Moulin Rouge

I'm not exactly sure what qualifies as a musical. I saw an interesting one lately, New Orleans, starring Louis Armstrong and Billy Holiday. Not a great movie but it had some great music.

Another one I've missed: Miracle on 34th Street, starring a very young Natalie Wood.

It think that might be some sort of American cultural sin.
