Any have experience with speech recognition software including the Windows 7 built-in? Losing my sense of touch to the point I might not be able to type much longer, already making too many mistakes that I have to correct.

Year ago I fiddle with some don't recall what it was, but it couldn't handle my hybrid New York/Southern/Military accent.

I saw it demonstrated and it seemed to work quite well.

I lost my Boston accent years, decades, ago! I discovered Windows 7 has a built-in tutorial on the use of the software, that and some experimentation might answer all my questions on the built-in SW; still curious about other SW that might be better.

Dragon Naturally Speaking is the market leader but I don't know if it is substantially better than Win7 built in.

I've seen Dragon advertized on TV but at $350 it's a bit out of my budget, worth keeping in mind in case I need more features or performance than the built-in offers. I'm curious about how well any of them work for on-line crosswords?

Dragon is as low as $50, I believe.

This is their page for Accessibility, those with disabilities, which may be of use to you. That version is $99.

http://www.nuance.com/dragon/accessibil ... /index.htm

Unfortunately, I know of no way to trial Dragon. So I'd suggest trying the Win7 built in solution first and see how that works for you.

I wonder what i was looking at for $350, maybe some corporate version. Thanks for the lead in case W7 doesn't work out.
These crosses I'm being tossed create some interesting challenges but as a retired engineer I'm actually having fun finding ways to skirt the problems. You would be amazed at the variety of innovative tools that are available.

Very similar experience. It couldn't understand Cultivated Australian; it could handle only Broad Australian. I had to do a funny voice something like Steve Irwin or Paul Hogan. I wasn't impressed.

I believe the software has improved considerably since then.

That's the one I fiddled with, a much earlier version then what is out there now.

I tried the W7 SW with a desktop mic, didn't function at all. I bought a headset with attached mic which worked better during the Tutorial and Training program but made far too many errors interpreting my speech in actual use. Not sure where to go next, possibly try to train the SW to better understand my speech.

When I was fooling around with the Dragon software, I found the "training" to be difficult, and is why I finally gave up. I had no real need for it, you on the other hand seem to have a need, you may want to persist.

Bob,

Received an E-mail this morning stating that Dragon is having an on line sale for $49. and change. If you are interested.

Thanks, I'm having some success with the W7 version, it is taking a while though.
