It was pointed out to me that some emails I send out promoting musical performances do not look good, or even intelligible, on an iPhone. Usually these emails contain a combination of text and images.

Do any of you smart phone users have a suggestion about how emails should be formatted for maximum readability on a phone?

Leave off the images.

OK, I think I figured it out. I had some text arranged in three columns. Apparently when the text get reformatted for the phone screen all of the excess "white space" is deleted and the columns all run together.

Yes.

The phones are capable of doing the formatting, but not all in one width of the screen, so most of the settings are adjusted to do exactly what you said, take out the spaces and get all the text in into a single width of the screen if possible. Things like columns wouldn't work that well. Plain text is best. It's also best to be as succinct as possible. You can adjust the text size, but if it's a big email, you have to scroll a lot.

The trouble is, if you are emailing large group of people, you don't know who is using a smart phone and who is using a computer.

I think you need to play to the lowest common denominator.

With a large group of people, I generally find it's best to keep it short and easy to read, anyway.

Keep it simple is always the best.

It was simple and easy to read... on a computer screen.
