Would it be possible to keep this room open for the Paralympic Games? Basically the Olympics for people with physical disabilities .... This year's event will start around the end of August.

The Paralympics have been rising in prestige in recent years, though not to the point where they get the same kind of TV coverage (at least on U.S. TV). Since 1988 the Summer Paralympics have competed in the same cities as the regular Olympics, using many of the same venues. And I read recently that many of the Paralypmic events now do sell out. Many advertisers in the U.S., as well, now mention that they support both the Olympic and the Paralympic teams.

I remember for the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, and the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, I was able to watch events streaming live over the Internet. I expect that will be available again this year.

Having competed in adaptive track and field myself back in the 80's, in the Michigan Wheelchair Games, the Paralympics are of definite interest to me and I would very much like to share the Paralympics with all of you.

Edward,

I don't see why not. I'll look forward to your contributions.

One of the mainstream British channels is covering the Paralympic games. BBC has the main Olympics but Channel 4 is providing Paralympic coverage I think.

Sure, we'd probably keep it open for a few months anyway. I'm pretty sure there will be Paralympic Coverage in the US.

"USOC announces expanded coverage for London 2012 Paralympic Games"

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Today the United States Olympic Committee announced broadcast and online coverage plans for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. By creating original video content for the U.S. Paralympics "utube" channel, "utube"/USParalympics, while also partnering with NBCUniversal and the International Paralympic Committee, U.S. Paralympics will provide the American public with more coverage of the U.S. Paralympic Team than any previous year.

[.....]

USParalympics.org will also have significant coverage of the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Team.

In addition to the online content, NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) will air one-hour highlight shows on Sept. 4, 5, 6 and 11 at 7 p.m. EDT. Following the Paralympic Games, on Sept. 16, NBC will broadcast a 90 minute special from 2-3:30 p.m. EDT. All NBC and NBC Sports Network Paralympic highlight shows and specials will re-air on Universal Sports Network and UniversalSports.com.

"utube" is my obvious euphemism for a certain website.

More at the link.

Olympic gold rush prompts race for Paralympic tickets

Team GB's medals success at the London 2012 Olympics has caused demand for Paralympic tickets to soar with almost 1.5 million tickets already sold.

The Paralympic Games begin with the Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, August 29 and after what could be one of Britain's best performance in the Olympic Games, it is likely to be a sell-out.

Fans have already bought up all of the reasonably priced tickets to the ceremony with only £300 and £500 tickets still remaining.

The Paralympics are underway!

I've got the livestream of a preliminary men's wheelchair basketball game between Australia and South Africa going. The Aussies are up by 22 and it's only the first half. Poor South Africa.

To watch video, go to http://www.paralympic.org/
Schedules are at this page: http://www.paralympic.org/Events/London2012/Schedule

Currently watching football 5-a-side between UK and Spain.

This is football (soccer) designed for visually impaired players. The ball has a bell inside. All players except the goalkeeper are blindfolded, to insure that a fielder with less of an impairment does not have an unfair advantage. The goalkeepers may be fully sighted. Hi Edward,

Thank you for starting this thread. I had forgotten all about the paralympics and had wanted to see them. I am disappointed that there is so little coverage on US TV.

At some point do you think it would be possible to have both Olympic events held at the same time? I can imagine that there would be difficulties considering the special needs of many of the paralympians. But if it can be done, I would love to see the two become one.

I doubt it because both Games mostly use the same venues. Unless you lengthened the combined event to 3 1/2 weeks or so. (Currently the Olympics run for 17 days and the Paralympics for 12.)

However, the good news is that the IOC and the IPC recently signed an agreement providing that the Olympics and Paralympics will continue to be held in the same city through at least 2020.

United States: NBC Sports will provide only minimal coverage of the Paralympics, with five-and-a-half hours in total and no live coverage. NBC Sports Network will air one-hour highlight shows on 4, 5, 6 and 11 September while NBC will air a 90 minute special on 16 September - a week after the end of the Games.[89] Critics and American athletes expressed disappointment at NBC for its decision not to broadcast any live coverage of the Games, continuing the broadcaster's trend of providing minimal coverage for the Paralympics

Australia: The Australian Broadcasting Corporation will broadcast the 2012 Paralympics across Australia, mostly on its digital channel ABC2. It will show over 100 hours of live coverage including both ceremonies.

Hmm. Anyway, here's the medal tally:
