Along the back roads of Eastern Kansas.

Living in an area that is within a few minutes driving distance of the amenities of a major metropolitan area AND of scenic rural vistas DOES have its advantages!

A winter's drive along old Kansas Highway 5 between Leavenworth and Kansas City provides some surprisingly photogenic landscapes. These nine photos were taken on Sunday, February 17, 2013. More photos will be posted at a later date, as I am out and about. (If the NWS forecast is to believed, some may be of deep snow!)

Jim, if you folks are looking for a quiet Kansas small town getaway on June 1st consider coming to the Muscotah Rose Festival. We're going out to visit friends in Muscoth and to enjoy a good old country get-together. I think you would probably come in through Atchison. You can look for information as it comes available here: http://www.thenewsleaf.com/ in the Muscotah column by our dear friend Selma and CJ.

Thanks for the heads up, Bob. I've bookmarked the Effingham newspaper. Yes, if we are at are KCK home, we would take 73 highway to Atchison, then head west on US 159.

If we were at the farm (a good possibility on June 1), we would take US 136 west to 159, then straight south to Muscotah.

Interestingly, it's about equidistant from either location … five miles farther from Rock Port.

Did you know Joe Tinker of Tinkers to Evers to Chance double play fame was from Muscotah?

The old town water storage tank is in the shape of a ball and the town is planning to turn it into a Tinker memorial and museum of sorts; should be an interesting project since the ball is only about 36 feet in diameter. At the moment the tank is laying out in a field and needs some preservation if it's going to last.

:) :) :)

Marie, I'd much rather spend ALL of my time at our farm, which is sixty miles from any metropolitan area of over 10,000 residents.

You wanna buy a nice, 3-bedroom, 3 and a half bath home in KCK cheap?

Jim: I enjoyed your photos.

Best cease traveling soon and find safe shelter, though! If the weather forecast in correct, some major snow about to hit the midwest! Stay safe!
