The first official portrait of Prince William's wife Catherine has been unveiled at a London gallery, where it was hailed by its subject as "amazing" but slammed by some critics.

The National Portrait Gallery commissioned award-winning artist Paul Emsley to produce the painting of the Duchess of Cambridge, who is expecting her first child this summer, after she became patron of the gallery early last year.

The 31-year-old royal, who attended a private viewing of the painting with her husband on Friday ahead of its unveiling to the public, told the artist: "It's just amazing, I thought it was brilliant."

Prince William added: "It's beautiful, it's absolutely beautiful."

I think it insipid. It looks as though it belongs on the cover of a Mills & Boon

She looks a bit mean and sour in the painting. I don't think it is a good likeness at all.

Don't like the tight, thin smile. I am surprised the she is pleased with it.

Think Mona Lisa

Is she?, Or is she just being "Royal"? We will likely never know.

I also think it doesn't reflect her very well. She's very pretty but that painting doesn't capture it at all.

Not to nickpit but I'm thinking you've never seen anyone die of liver failure. Maybe you have but I'm thinking it looks more like she was just informed that she has liver failure.

I imagine this is the look she would have on her face if her in-laws brought the dogs over and they messed on her new rug.

Well, if I were her, I would not have let this portrait be shown to anybody. Would have fired the painter and found a new one.

She is probably thinking, "Up you Aussies", I will never be your Queen and to quote Rhett Butler, "I don't give a damn."

Just a thought for the front page of the Australian Women's Weekly and all those other Aussie publications that keep their circulations up by feeding this Royal "pap" to their mindless readers.

My mother died of liver failure 7 years ago. Actually, liver cancer. Same effect.
The doctor gave her diagnosis Wednesday. She was jaundiced. She was still walking around, barely, on Friday, she died at the hospital 1:00 am Monday. My sister and I were there.

That brings us back to being a "Royal", stiff upper lip, don't complain (at least in public), or as an American Westerner might put it.....Cowboy on.

A bad portrait of Churchill was unveiled in Churchill's presence. The great wartime leader was clearly not pleased.

Graham Sutherland (1903-1980) continues to be remembered, above all else, as the artist whose portrait of Sir Winston Churchill so offended the venerable figure that he had it destroyed.

Sutherland must have been drunk:

Ahh...the jaundice...I didn't think of that but it does look yellowish. Sorry about the death of your mother but perhaps good that she did not suffer for years, though horrible for you and your family. My brother died of cirrhosis and at times had as much as a hundred pounds of excess fluid on him so I was thinking of that and not the jaundice.

Maybe Churchill was more critical as he was a painter himself.

Maybe. But it is a truly dreadful portrait.

I do not like Her Highness' portrait either.

Val:

Not to nitpick, but after years on this Forum, I have found it most wise never to guess what experiences people have had in life. I was going to respond that after visiting hundreds dying from liver, I agreed very strongly with Norman that the flesh tone of the portrait could indeed be of someone suffering from liver failure.

But that is neither here nor three. It was most gracious of you to offer condolences to Norman after having guessed that he hadn't seen someone die of liver failure. Losing a mother to liver cancer certainly settled that.

On a happy note, Norman, the comment about the tone of the Duchess' skin was so pithy that you made me laugh a bellicose laugh. My secretary in the other office asked, "What now?" to which I said, "Oh, it's just Norman being Norman."

I would have preferred that the Duchess (could the media please stop just calling her "Catherine?") be portrayed in her stunning display of royal jewelry and accouterments.

She went to Mass nearly daily.
Apparently all those prayers paid off. She was still driving her car to church two weeks before she died, she lived with three of her children, and could talk an hour with me on her last day.
Infinitely better than the end of people I saw in the nursing home where I worked.

Better than when they keep calling her Kate Middleton. :)

As for the jewells I think she'll have more access to the substantial stuff when QEII dies (long may she reign!)

The absence is entirely deliberate. Part of the reason for the popularity of the couple is that they are very low-key.

Only just noticed that. And this is the man who criticised my Catholic-Irish/Australian-Labor-Republicanism? (I'd tremble to think what you'd call me if I were a monarchist!)

I don't think it's a bad image of her. It seems nice enough.

I do think it's a little odd for a portrait. It's more of a head shot - like a driver's license photo. I think of "portrait" as involving full width of shoulders and from at least mid-chest up (if not waist-up or full-body, as in the Churchill example)

Speaking of proper address and driver's licenses, what is her legal name that would appear on her license (not that I think she gets to drive anymore) or passport?

If a last name is ever used I think it's Windsor but I believe William's name tag on his uniform says Wales. I call her Katie Cambridge myself
