A councillor on Queensland's Sunshine Coast has described plans by billionaire Clive Palmer to install 150 life-size dinosaurs at his Coolum resort as bizarre and tacky.

Mr Palmer has erected a Tyrannosaurus rex beside the golf course and wants to bring in another 149 of the creatures.

However, Cr Russell Green says he will need to apply to council if he wants to bring in more than four dinosaurs as it changes the intended use of the area.

"The Australian PGA is staged there of which council is a very big supporter and the resort itself is a very big supporter as well.

"It's almost turning into a scene out of Happy Gilmore where you putt down the fairway, you bounce the ball off T-rex's left leg and get it into the 18th hole - it's quite bizarre."

Outspoken mining billionaire Clive Palmer has resigned from Queensland's Liberal National Party, on the eve of what was set to be one of the biggest showdowns in Queensland politics.

A crucial vote of the party executive was due today to decide whether to expel Mr Palmer, who was a life member of the LNP.

Mr Palmer's membership was suspended after he accused Queensland Government ministers of exaggerating the state's debt.

Details have emerged that shed more light on plans by billionaire businessman Clive Palmer to develop his resort on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Mr Palmer already has a life-size mechanical tyrannosaurus rex named "Jeff" on the golf course at his five-star Palmer Coolum Resort.

Mr Palmer has lodged a material change of use and development application with the Sunshine Coast Council.

He is seeking to build a mini dinosaur exhibit with up to 50 small animated statues, as well as a large vintage car museum, a children's vintage car ride, an 18-hole mini-golf course and a new golf driving range.

Palmer owns luxury resorts at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast and Port Douglas Queensland and is building a replica of the Titanic. In April 2012, he announced that he had signed a memorandum of understanding with CSC Jinling Shipyard to construct a replica of RMS Titanic, the Titanic II. The ship is set to be completed in 2016. Palmer hopes to re-create the Titanic as closely as possible with its familiar outside looks and also on the inside. The ship will be built in China and will set sail in late 2016.

Mr Palmer showed off designs for the Titanic II during a press conference on board a mothballed aircraft carrier in New York overnight.

He said the Titanic II, which will be built in China, should be ready to launch in 2016 and would have three passenger classes, just like the original Titanic.

He said passengers would have to wear period costumes and would be prevented from mingling with passengers from other classes.

And the flamboyant tycoon said he would be travelling below decks in third class like Leonardo DiCaprio in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic.

Building it in China means it should fall apart pretty quickly or be filled with arsenic.

The local council says it is yet to assess a development application by Clive Palmer to build the world's biggest dinosaur park at his Coolum resort on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

But that has not stopped the billionaire businessman from forging ahead with his plans.

Mr Palmer has ordered more than 165 animated dinosaurs from China.

They range in size from two to 20 metres.
