The remains of a World War II carrier pigeon - still bearing a secret coded message - have been found in the chimney of a house in England.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-11-02/p ... ge/4349146

Quote:
Surrey resident David Martin found the bird's bones in his chimney when he was renovating his fireplace.

"About three handfuls of rubbish later, down came the leg with the red capsule on with a message," he said.

"You had to unscrew it and on a piece of paper, cigarette paper thin, was the secret message."

The capsule is the type used by spies who worked in occupied Europe.

The 70-year-old message was written by a Sergeant W Stott and is in code - which points to one destination.

I don't mean to criticize the homeowner but it really seems like he should have thought about cleaning out his fireplace sooner. I mean seriously, in 70 years no one has cleaned it?

Here is the message if you want to try cracking the code.

I think it's really James Daly's fireplace. The message is a simple translation from my training in ASA. It reads.

James. I dropped down here to stay warm. It's time to let me back in and feed me, and don't you think it's time to clean this chimney? Incidentally, I think you have way too much time on your hands. You know, I have told you before to find another hobby and let me go back to my unit. Oops. I think I got my leg caught in all this junk. :)

I think it's a lunch order.

I don't understand why they can't crack it...I'm saying that because I read a headline that said they may never crack it. Don't they have the codes from that era?

Val,
How important could the message be? I mean if it were the fourth secret of Fatima maybe it would be, but chances are the information is worthless. On the other hand if James would have fed that pigeon and kept that chimney clean then whoever was supposed to get that secret would know what it means. :)

Val,

It probably required some sort of encryption key known only to the intended recipient(s). It is doubtful that such a key would have been preserved for seventy years. Did you ever read about the Enigma machine?

The code probably could be cracked if somebody wanted to pay the salaries for a team of experts to devote many hours to the project.

Can we send you the bill?

Somewhere in the first few letter groups is a key that says "Use this code sheet". The code sheet is probably a "one time use" key that is destroyed when no longer useful.

Someone will eventually crack it, if for no other reason then it's there, NSA could probably feed it into their super computer and get something out, but will they ever tell us?

Is the estate of this bird due a pension? (Payable in cracked corn, probably?)

I'm not sure I remember hearing about the machine but do remember that the British were able to crack many codes.

You can send me the bill, I won't pay it but you can send it to me. I want to know what they wanted for lunch.

Think about it... if you were in France would you send to England for lunch?

Thanks for mentioning that. The tragic death of the very gifted Alan Turing should serve as a reminder to us of the need for compassion, as well as the dangers of junk "science" and pseudo-"cures".

Maybe they were craving Shepherd's Pie?

Maybe it was the pigeon who was supposed to be the lunch and when he stopped to read the message he decided to live in the chimney instead.

A Canadian history buff seems to have cracked a coded World War II message that was found strapped to the leg of a dead carrier pigeon.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-12-17/h ... de/4432652

Quote:
But Canadian man Gordon Young says it took just 17 minutes to decipher the message, using his great uncle's code book from World War I.

Quote:
Mr Young says the message identified German troop and Panzer tank positions, pointing out the location of headquarters and observation posts to target for attacks.

He says the message was sent during the battle for the French city of Caen in the wake of the 1944 D-day landings.

"The observer identifies himself first. Second, he tells them his recorded supplemental report, which is about 330, I think 325 or something on the actual form," he said.

"And then the next one is the most important, what has happened in the last 15, 20 minutes.

"And it's the Panzer assault. And then he explains that the western observer is taking note of how that's unfolding from his angle."
