Why the heck do they encourage the deer to cross in high traffic areas? :tsk:

David L,

The caller really didn't seem to get the point that the deer can't read the signs and aren't attracted to that crossing because of the sign. I imagine it's their natural path to cross over to the other side and it's the cars that are in the way. Other than fencing in tens of miles or even hundreds of miles of highway, sounds like it's a problem that will just have to stay and not really anyone's fault.

But, your comment may have been tongue in cheek. I can't tell. :)

It's because of the GOP mandate in the Bush administration for deer to cross where the crossing signs have been posted. After years of study the sign placement was chosen after the deer were trained through genetical selection of DNA based upon a tiny chip placed in logical places of grazing. This chip was designed to be assimilated by the deer and eventually lodge itself in a part of the deer brain where it could manipulate the "direction" of the deer path based on the transmitter placed on the sign. The scientists purposely encouraged the deer to cross in high traffic areas so they would be noticed by the public thereby justifying the huge expenditure of the GOP for this program.

I guess the deer are the only ones smart enough to read the signs.

Well, in the case of chickens, the question of why they cross the road at all is a higher priority.

Why did the muddy chicken cross the road and then return back to where he started from?

That's just the local deer traffic.

Interstate deer use the overpass.

It's much more exciting to hit a Moose or an Elk, especially in a compact car so we don't warn the animals.

Because of the deer chip the deer eventually became organized whereas the other smaller animals had no such organization and crossed where they shouldn't have. This resulted in sporadic road kill which exists to this day. That's when the buzzards were directed to Hinckley Ohio to organize and "clean up the mess started by the Republicans". See (Buzzards of Hinckley Ohio)

Why are you making fun of a serious subject? Have you ever hit a deer? They do massive damage. How would a chicken even be out in the middle of nowhere? That makes no sense. I think you have gone too far in an attempt toward levity. You have deliberately committed a thread drift.

Actually aliens have morphed into many deer. That's how they live among us and continue to be "hidden" while they do their organizing. They're insidious. Some can actually read a few short sentences. That's why the coyotes have been introduced.

Moose and elk have been warned to stay out of the eastern states primarily for this reason. That's why you never see one there.

So that they provide an easier target.

A good solution is an underpass. There is a shot of one in the video at 1:21 and another at 1:41.

(Of course, there needs to be a sign in English directing the deer to the underpass.)

All,

Okay, so Donna is unusually... ah... not very bright. And, after three prangs into deer, probably a lousy driver (or maybe she was very hungry). But there is a kindness of heart about her that I for one would like to see more often.

Our local park (euphemistically called "lake balboa" because there is a four foot deep man made cement "pond") has signs on the roads indicating duck and geese crossings. I assume that both duck and geese can read because they do seem to largely, though not always, obey the signs.

I believe Jed Clampett had one of those!

Jim,

...and I believe Elly May's ducks and geese were sometimes to be found in the cee-ment pond.

Well as rich as old Jed was, he didn't have one this size....it's a little over a mile around it and I often take walks there. Also, I'm sure Jed's ceee-ment pond was deeper. I call it a pond because there is a real pond by my Aunt and Uncles old place on Cape Cod that was about the same size and they didn't call it a lake, but a pond.

I recall that Maine did fence some sections back in the 40's. A deer can easily jump even a ten foot fence, but they tend to be a bit cautious about what is on the other side. Thus it alerted them to the traffic. Or at least that was the theory; don't know how well it worked out in practice.

We have deer fences in strategic locations in Colorado, they have periodic ramps that allow the deer to cross from the road to the field but not the other way round. We have critter alerts sensors along some stretches of road: I have seen them lit up with an alert but never have I seen an animal during the alert! We also have CODOT road crews that pick up the roadkills because none of the other stuff works very well. I particularly like those little whistles that mount on the front bumper, best deer attractors I've ever seen.

I can attest to that. Over the years, our vehicles have been involved in four deer/auto collisions.

All of them had the deer whistles on the front bumper! :)

Yes, I was thinking about the fact we have duck crossing signs around here.

Come to think of it I never see any Ped crossing signs that always confused me when I was little...

Well the answer to that is simple. Deer don't whistle like that and wouldn't know what that whistle sound meant. A little more research on deer whistling would have achieved better results I am sure.

Jim,

What is a deer whistle? Something that is supposed to scare of deer but instead attracts them?

Val, it's a device attached to the front bumper which supposedly channels air through a tube, creating a high frequency sound that is inaudible to humans but is supposed to scare the bejabbers out of deer.

I have seen deer here in Wyandotte county, where the numbers have risen dramatically over the past three decades since they have no predators save the automobile to keep the numbers in check who will stand idly by at roadside and watch a car with these supposedly terrifying deer repellant whistles pass by.

Mostly, the whistles work for the entrepreneurs who sell them to we who are gullible!

James,

I have a deep fear, well of everything but that's not the point. All those old movies showing people in quick sand made me terrified of it, I may not be able to meet you for dinner if I'm going to be at risk.

Great, I was planning on going to Western Australia after dinner. I guess that's not going to happen.
