I have been advised by a priest not to stay with certain people.I feel that close proximity of habitual sinners ,even if they are my relatives,is an invitation to demons

When does God give permission to demons?

Quote:
some "rights" to attack them recognized by God (so the demon has permission to attack them from God).

Jesus would tell you the truth, God does not tempt men and does not control the fallen
angels. He would not send any evil on men. God is love and all things work together for good for those who love Him are called according to his purpose.

We would be wise to follow His example and "eat with sinners" sharing the good
news and show the fallen, the example that has been given to us. They long to
hear that there is truly a solution to sin and death. Our hearts call out to hear
His voice. - maybe through your vary own voice..

He came down to us when we were sinners and defiled. He laid down on the cross
to take away the sins of the world. He didnt just come and take the Saints.
He came to make Saints.

Be strong and of good courage when you find yourself in situations of temptation.
Prepare ahead of time with prayers of mission. Be a soldier of Christ. Ware the
full armor of God. Evil cannot stand against you if you commit your life Jesus.

Much more can be said, but for now ponder these things.

IHS

God doesn't send demons to harm people, but He does at times permit their activity. Here's what the Catechism has to say on this topic:

Quote:
395 The power of Satan is, nonetheless, not infinite. He is only a creature, powerful from the fact that he is pure spirit, but still a creature. He cannot prevent the building up of God's reign. Although Satan may act in the world out of hatred for God and his kingdom in Christ Jesus, and although his action may cause grave injuries - of a spiritual nature and, indirectly, even of a physical nature- to each man and to society, the action is permitted by divine providence which with strength and gentleness guides human and cosmic history. It is a great mystery that providence should permit diabolical activity, but "we know that in everything God works for good with those who love him."

One of the punishments of the demons is that they must act as sparring partners for humans. God lets them attack these inferior creatures, but limits their efforts to those that can be resisted. Thus, in their effort to promote evil the demons toughen the spiritual muscles of those creatures.

I do wish at times that God didn't have such a high estimate of my abilities to resist. :(

Simon,

I wouldn't worry about it too much - regardless of where/when the fallen angels are tempting us, remember that they have already lost the battle. "Therefore resist, firm in faith." However, if associating with certain people means that we are in a situation where we are likely to commit seroius sin, we should avoid those people to the extent that charity permits. You, and you alone, know to what extent certain 'friends' become an occasion of sin for you. E.g if you struggle with sexual temptation, walking into a brothel is a bad idea. If you struggle with a tendency to steal watches, avoid going into a jeweller's shop. It is even a grave sin to voluntarily place yourself in a situation that, for you, is an occasion of grave sin. I say grave not mortal, and voluntary - there are people who don't know about this, and there are also times when we cannot avoid those situations or when we enter them unwittingly.

In this matter, follow your priest's advice. If you find yourself tempted to sin, immediately make the sign of the Cross and invoke help (if I remembered to do this I'd be a whole lot less sinful than I am!). But remember, also, that charity - even natural charity, let alone supernatural charity - does require us to sometimes spend time with sinners, especially if they are our family. I'm not saying to go and join in with acts you consider sinful, just that sometimes cutting people off completely isn't helpful. Umm... if you don't understand the British colloquialism, cutting someone off is totally avoiding them, not answering their calls etc.

And, frankly, stop worrying about demons. A crucifix in every room and round your neck, judicial use of holy water and the sign of the Cross, and then forget about it. They have no power over us except what we give them. Just ignore them - it is, after all, what they hate most.

I feel it safer to admit I am human and avoid occasions of sin.I would not blame God but my own pride.

That is true but evil is real .

The best way to keep demons out is Keeping the Christ in which means that I would have to be humble enough to admit that Christ won the victory and that I need to remember that constantly.

For me the worst sinners are those who have left the Faith or trivialize the Faith-Glory is to be given to God at all times and at all places.
I know of a priest who does not attend parties because they are occasions of sin for him.He is quite a holy priest because when he laid his hands on me I had an authentic experience of the Holy Spirit.
Gods Grace is not cheap- a heavy price has been paid .Playing with Gods Grace is something I really dislike

I do feel strengthened after a good confession.

Evil is very mysterious -Satan is cruel and a tyrant-if you ever have been under the control or influence of evil people.

This is daily work and at least for me requires time and effort

St. Michael the Archangel, the prince of the Heavenly angels, has a special mission to protect us from the devil.

The Moslems pray to Mecca five times a day. Why not pray for St. Michael's help four times a day, on awakening, at noon, at supper, and bedtime? It'll make you feel better, and it you're putting out that much effort, rest assured God will protect you.

Here's a list of prayers to St. Michael
http://www.2heartsnetwork.org/Michael.htm

I think the first on the list was written by Pope Leo XIII, after he'd had a vision of the bloody twentieth century.

Going back to the question in the OP, I don't think we can know exactly when God gives permission for demons to attack. In his divine justice and mercy he allows it to happen at various times to various souls. Saint (Padre) Pio and many other saints were often assailed by demons, but they were never overcome.

One good book to read to understand this subject is "An Exorcist Tells his Story" by the official exorcist of Rome, Fr Amorth.

In this book he explains that those who dabble in the occult are open to demonic influences. I also remember him saying that the children of those who are into magic and the occult can also be influenced.
