Champion mare Black Caviar sustained muscle tears and severe bruising during her narrow victory at Royal Ascot at the weekend.

In the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, the Australian thoroughbred extended her unbeaten streak to 22 wins from 22 starts.

The performance of jockey Luke Nolen was criticised after the nerve-wracking win, and questions were raised about the future of the mare.

Black Caviar has taken the next step in her comeback to racing with an exhibition gallop at Caulfield in Melbourne on Saturday.

The great mare cantered off from the 1,400 metres and was allowed to quicken from the 600 and cruise to the line under a tight hold by regular jockey Luke Nolen.

It was the first public appearance for the unbeaten champion since her narrow win at Royal Ascot in June and she got a rousing cheer as she galloped down the straight.

She has clearly benefitted from a lengthy spell and Peter Moody said the day out would bring her on for a tilt at a third Lightning Stakes in a fortnight.

Black Caviar made her appearance on the National Jockeys' Trust race day which helps raise funds to aid injured jockeys and their families.

Black Caviar's stature in Australian racing has been further recognised with her induction into the Racing Hall of Fame.

Bob Charley, chairman of Australian Racing Hall of Fame, said although it was not usually the policy of the committee to induct horses while they were still racing, Black Caviar was a deserved exception.

Black Caviar started at prohibitive odds once again on Friday, with two punters placing bets of $200,000 and $100,000 at $1.05.

The man who has the job of steering the great mare, Luke Nolen, said she did not disappoint.

"She felt amazing to me, travelled well in the run, flowed into the race on her own accord… and she took care of the rest," he said.

"It’s been a wonderful ride the whole time… It’s been a privilege to be part of such a great racing story, an Australian sporting story."

Black Caviar has produced a gallop so fast her trainer has described it as "scary", as she prepares to stretch her unbeaten record to 25 on Saturday.

"That's almost as fast as she's ever gone here at Caulfield," said trainer Peter Moody after the mare worked on the course proper on Monday.

"You don't want to know what time she ran. It'll scare you."

With the passing of his exuberance, Moody revealed Black Caviar had dashed over the final 400m of her 800m gallop in under 22 seconds, an effort that left him "ecstatic".

Trainer Peter Moody has laid it squarely on the line - Black Caviar is unbeatable at Randwick on Saturday.

"Facts and figures suggest there's not another horse on the planet that can beat her under these conditions over this distance," Moody said.

Black Caviar has written yet another chapter in her record-breaking career with victory in the $1 million TJ Smith Stakes at Royal Randwick.

A sell-out crowd of almost 24,000 waited until the last race to witness her 25th victory and only her second in Sydney, her first since the 2011 TJ Smith.

She strolled away to a three-length victory ahead of Epaulette and Bel Sprinter to put the naysayers who emerged during the week in their place.

"She's a special horse and words escape me," tearful jockey Luke Nolen said returning to scale.

"I'm not a wordsmith or a very well-educated man by any stretch but she totally touches me.

Black Caviar's trainer Peter Moody has announced the champion mare has been retired after recording an unprecedented 25 wins from 25 starts.

Black Caviar's feats on Australian racetracks are unsurpassed. Her latest victory at Randwick saw her eclipse the previous record of 14 Group One wins held by Kingston Town.
