Not that I needed another reminder of my ever-increasing age, but today came the latest.

Stan Musial passes

Stan Musial passes

Nice write up on today’s KC Star Website

Stan Musial

Some of my favorite anecdotes:

“I’ve had pretty good success with Stan,” Dodgers pitcher Carl Erskine once said, “by throwing him my best pitch and backing up third.”

Preacher Roe, another former Dodger, said: “I throw him four wide ones, then I try to pick him off first base.”

At the 1951 All-Star Game, Roe was told by Yankees pitcher Eddie Lopat to watch closely when Musial came to bat, because Lopat had a strategy for facing Musial.

When Musial hit a home run off Lopat, Roe shouted: “I see what you mean, but I found that way to pitch to him a long time ago, all by myself.”

Musial so tormented the Dodgers that fans started to mutter “Here comes the man,” when Musial came to bat. A St. Louis reporter overheard the fans and the nickname “The Man” was born.

And this is far more important to me than his greatness as a baseball player:

Musial was also known for how good he was off the field, and here’s another incredible statistic: He was married 71 years to his wife Lillian, before she died last year. The couple lived in St. Louis, where he remained a beloved figure.

As a Brooklyn Dodger fan in my young days, I hated him coming to town.
