Shall I invoke the intercession of the Patron of Lost Causes for the lowly Tigers?

I am thankful that I was an adult and lived in Detroit so I could appreciate the World Series victory in 1984. However, since then there has been several stabs at mediocrity followed by concerted efforts towards laughingstock.

I'm petitioning the Holy See for a plenary indulgence for having worn a Tigers cap and professed my allegiance for the Motown boys in the face of overwhelming adversity.

Isn't the owner of the Tigers a pizza driver?

I think St Jude is still working with the Cubs

I think the Cubs, White Sox, and Red Sox have all established stronger bona fides as hopeless causes than the Tigers have yet done.

That they seem so successful in their present efforts to crash suggests they might be succesful were they to try competing with the league leaders.

Now wait a minute the Cathederal in St. Petersburg Fl. (where the TampaBay Devil Rays play) is the Cathederal of St. Jude.......so there HAS to be some influence there.

Yes, Tom Monaghan owns half of the world, including Domino's. He is also a conservative Catholic and very involved in charitable causes. Might God be giving Tom the old "My Grace is sufficient for you...and Tiger's fans"?

Good article on Monaghan and Catholic interests:

I will admit that the Boston and Chicago boys hold the dubious honors for futility, but they have incredible fan loyalty, support, and markets. The Tigers get no respect at home or abroad.

Except that Tom Monaghan hasn't owned the Tigers for several years. His ex-pizza rival ("ex" because Tom Monaghan sold Dominos Pizza), Mike Illitch, has owned the Tigers since 1992. Mike Illitch sits atop the Little Caesars empire and also owns the Detroit Red Wings, who provide a very sharp contrast to the baseball team.

Perhaps with the NHL collective bargaining agreement running out at the end of the 2003-2004 season and worries there won't even be an NHL when the dust settles, Illitch will turn his full attention and resources to the Tigers. I believe they'll be competitive again in 3 years.

Those of you who have been sending prayer requests for the Tigers to St. Jude, keep it up. They've won two in a row

Dean,

You been drinking? :P Define "competitive". For the Bengals, that could have a meaning not normally associated with the word.

Yeah, the new definition means a record of 3-13.

Mea Culpa...you are correct. I got my pizza faces mixed up. I haven't been back to the Motor City to Comerica Park, Domino's nor Little Caesars in 10 years. Illitch is, I believe, ethnically Macedonian.

Your optimism is heartening. I do hope Trammell can turn the Tigers around and I trust that he is doing it the right way...bring in the young guns and sort out the good from the bad. Use the farm system and don't blow 10 million on one "star"

Dave,

Nope, not drinking. Just throwing out a prayer. Hey, if the Tigers get to .500 in 3 years, I'll consider them competitive.

But I really do expect Illitch to put in some resources with the Tigers because his vaunted Red Wings (and the rest of the NHL) will be locked out at the end of the 2004 season. :(

Let's put it this way... I also expect the Tigers to be competitive again long before the Lions.

I'll readily admit I'm wrong if my expectations don't pan out.

BRANDON INGE! 2 RUN HOMER IN THE BOTTOM OF THE 9TH OFF TROY PERCIVAL! TIGERS WIN! TIGERS WIN! TIGERS WIN!

Sorry. So few moments for us Tigers fans to cheer about this season, this is particularly sweet. :D

Continued prayers to St. Jude so that the Tigers avoid setting the modern record for losses in a season will be appreciated....... ;)

Well how do you like that? The Tigers won 5 of their last 6 to just avoid tying the '62 Mets.

It was very fun to listen to that 7 run outburst in the 6th inning on Sunday. I suppose it was the Tigs taking out a season's worth of frustration on the Twins' September call-ups.

Dave Dombrowski, who's been General Manager since he fired Randy Smith at the start of the '02 season, has a good track record (built the expansion Marlins into a world champion in only 5 years), but he certainly has his work cut out for him here....

Looking back nostagically at this thread nine years later .... the Tigers, since 2003, have been to the World Series twice, and in 2011/12, went to the playoffs in back to back years for the first time since the '30s.

Granted without a world championship to show for it, but still much improved. All those prayers to St. Jude worked.
