The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has approved a plan to draft an amended edition of the English-language Liturgy of the Hours for use in the United States.

The conference’s Committee on Divine Worship, headed by Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond of New Orleans, had recommended the action in light of new liturgical texts, including the Third Edition of the Roman Missal, the revised Grail Psalms and biblical canticles, and revision work begun by the International Committee on English in the Liturgy.

Quote:
The new edition will include changes in light of the new edition of the Roman Missal. Hymns will use English translations of Latin hymns provided by the International Committee on English in the Liturgy, which will also be consulted on translations of several regularly used prayers.

The new edition’s psalms will come from the Revised Grail Psalter, translated by the Benedictines at Conception Abbey in Missouri. Canticles from the Old Testament, the New Testament and the Gospel may use the current translation, an updated translation from the New American Bible, or new translations from Conception Abbey.

James,
Darn, I know a new edition is coming. I have the 4-volume and they're still in very good shape. I don't feel like replacing them yet. :(

I'm with Marie, they're expensive and I have the four volume set.

I'm not sure I understand why psalms and canticles need translation?

Because everybody doesn't read Hebrew?

I have you one better. :( Not only is my 4-volume set still in worn but prayable shape, but my wife has a set that is virtually untouched.

[tongue-in-cheek]Hopefully the new edition takes years to come out. With how slowly the bishops take to agree on anything definitive, perhaps there is hope.[/tongue-in-cheek]

If you want some insight into the difficulties in translating psalms (from a Jewish perspective), here's an excellent book:

That would be Greek. The Catholic Church, following Christ and the Apostles, has always used the Septuagint Psalms. Protestants use the Hebrew.

What's wrong with the new English translation of the Mass?

The Psalms were originally written in Hebrew. Anything else is a translation.

I'm pretty sure that the Grail Psalms are a translation from the Hebrew.

If you have to ask you are not paying attention. When I attend mass and feel I need to take out a dictionary to look up words that were prayed by the priest during mass, I find that a distraction.

HERESY! Don't you know that because the third translation is worlds better than the second, it must be immaculate? Any criticism of even the tiniest matter is clearly indicative of liberal socialist communist social justice seamless garment liturgical dancing Nuns on the Bus LCWR worship!

Seriously, when the new translation of the Missal came, I welcomed it. It really is superior to the old one. It restores a great deal of what we lost in the last decades. But it, like any man made thing, is not perfect and has significant imperfections. I think the vocabulary is one of them on places. So yes, there's nothing wrong with hoping for better.

I agree that in many respects the translation is an improvement, but in many ways it needs lots of work.

I suppose part of the problem is I do not use a missal. I want to "HEAR" the word of God proclaimed not read it. So every once in a while I hear something that brings a big "HunH what was that".

We are getting closer to the translation in my 1962 Baronius Press missal, interesting is it not? As Fr. Z likes to say; "brick by brick".
