I have been really, really busy. I have just simply been caught up in planning a graduation party, going to graduation parties, summer activities and softball.

I have a big tournament coming up this weekend and in our bracket are the dreaded Eagles. For those of you that don't know it, there is about a three year history with them and a vendetta to be settled. I have never beaten them. I do believe that this year, I have the team to do it.

Anyhow.......this weekend is my anniversary. I forgot about it. I have no idea how that happened. I remembered it was my anniversary because I heard my husband repeating something I had said, to someone he was talking to on the phone.

I had mentioned that I was so excited about this coming weekend and I could not wait for it. When he was relaying this story on the phone, he said, "I have no idea what we are doing, it is just 23 years but I think my wife has some big plans because she mentioned she was excited about this coming weekend. We will see what she has in store."

Ummm..........

How do I recover from this? I need some ideas quick. Seriously.

Hmm.... Elizabeth, didn't you mean to say, "We have never beaten them... We have the team to do it"? Or perhaps, "Our team has never beaten them."

About the anniversary, I haven't a clue. Has hubby ever forgotten it in the past :?:

Well, I guess you could be right. This has been My team for the last six years with a few tweaks here and there so I feel like these girls are mine. It is also my own unhealthy obsession with this green and white team so I get kind of personal with it.

Yeah right. Mr. Franklin Planner, Blackberries man of the hour does not forget anything.

Have you considered asking him to enjoy the game and go out for pizza after?

My hubby prefers the Golden Corral, he feels an all you can eat buffet is always the best for the money. :)

I never know what to do for anniversaries either. Usually we just spend extra time holding hands and grinning at each other like love-sick loons.

Neither do I. One year I thought about his and her massages and he nixed that pretty quick saying it was kind of weird.

We usually go to Mass in the morning, out to dinner at night and then sit around saying "Who would have thought......15 years ago, 20 years ago, etc"

For our ten year anniversary we went to South Carolina with his frequent flier miles and golfed a few rounds. We have not done anything big since then.

I think I will just tell him about the Eagles game. And he can say, 'Who would have thought 23 years ago we would spend our anniversary at a ball park with our daughter's ankle wrapped up tighter than a drum so she could pitch in a game her mother had to win."

Like K.Ann, we too like to just hold hands and enjoy each others company... full attention if you will... this at around 25 years, we are on 37 now. It started close to the empty nest time, when we both just started to learn to relax with each other, no agenda or kids to be involved with. This has gotten very pleasant for both of us... after our hectic early years of raising a family.

However, if I was you, I'd be honest and tell him you simply forgot about it... with your obsession about the game coming the same time. Then, you can open the door and ask what he would like to do. His answer may surprise you.

As it turns out, i have been had. He knew what I was talking about and he knew I forgot. He was talking into a dead phone.

For our anniversary he is willing to come to practice and help prepare my team for small ball round 4.

Now that, is love. :)

I did not get the anniversary present I wanted.

The Eagles beat me on a technicality in the line up that they did not question until the 6th inning when we exploded for four runs to take the lead.

Who would have thought 23 years ago that I would have spent an anniversary dinner at a hole in the wall bar, in the corner booth, in dusty shorts and a coaches shirt, with a sunburn for make-up, drinking the draft on special, listening to the worst Elvis karaoke in town, while my husband tried to console me?

Perhaps.

The good news is.......there is only one year left of this drama. After next year, my daughter ages out of this league. I will probably never coach Maggie. I will be a little too old by then.

Dive bars often have the best hamburgers. Did you try one? I CRAVE one right now. My twelve year-old son and I are going to find a good burger joint, where we will have the next in our series of talks about becoming a man.

Sorry you didn't get your anniversary present.

We did indeed split a mushroom & swiss burger while we were there. It was pretty late by the time we left so we went light on the food.

I have the absolute, most perfect place for you to go. Don't say it is too far. It is worth the trip.

Go to Miller's Bar in Dearborn. They do not even have plates. The burgers are served on pieces of waxpaper, the fries in cheap red baskets. Don't even ask for a salad, they will throw you out. You don't even get a bill. When you leave, you go up to the cashier and tell him what you ate and drank and they ring you up.

My husband and I happened upon it years ago and he even takes the big boys there now and again.

Yeah, I'm sorry too. And the way we lost it makes me so angry......If I had known how desperate those coaches were for a trophy, I would have gone out and bought them one before the game.

Elizabeth,

Dearborn is only 20 minutes away. And then we can go to Shatilah's and bring home middle-eastern treats and sweets for the family. A rare but greatly worthwhile stop!

Can you tell I have no sense of direction? I was thinking it would be quite a ride for you. No matter, you will love it.

The good news is...... no matter how old you are (and I'll bet I'm older... almost retired), you are as young as you will ever be right now... the heart doesn't age, it just gets wiser.

But then had the lineup been correct there would not have been a "technicality" to be exploited. You gotta play by the rules ALL the rules. Sorry.

BOB!! :( [] :( []

In a USSSA sanctioned tournament you are allowed to bat 10. Because of the heat or stomach flu I lost two girls before the third game. That left me with 11 girls. My daughter was pitching. She can not move left to right, nor can she run at the moment. That meant I got to bat the rest of my girls with one of them being the DH. I forgot to put DH after the girls name, but it did not matter. There was no one else.

Those coaches did not bother to question the DH until the 6th inning when we took the lead. All of a sudden it was an issue. We had started out the inning with two quick outs and then we rallied. After the 4th run crossed the plate they brought up the DH thing. I told them who was the DH and they demanded that she was an automatic out. We got to keep the two runs before the out, the other two were negated.

There had been no free defensive substituion or anything like that. She simply had not been declared the DH.

Cheap way to take a win if you ask me.

Sure it was and it hurt the girls, but someone forgot to fill out the lineup correctly IAW the rules and that rule was brought to the attention of the officials when it was to the opposing teams advantage. Why would they bring it up when it didn't matter?

I feel badly for your team because they won on the field, but lost in the rule book; but that is why there are rules. :(

I know, I know. I was writing and walking at the same time from diamond #10 to #2, trying to figure out how I was going to change the lineup.

That mistake is why I ended up in a dive bar, listening to terrible karaoke, drinking draft on special.
