My husband and I are both Catholic, but we were married outside of the Catholic Church. I am not allowed to take Communion since I was not married in the catholic church?

That is a question better asked of a priest in your own diocese than on an internet forum where you may get several answers from people (like me) who are not authorized nor have the expertise to answer the question.

But -- though you certainly don't have any obligation to explain to me and I expect no explanation -- I wonder why, if you are both Catholic, that you chose not to marry in the Church.

I will consider your position if stated with firm, well-thought-out, quiet reasoning. Hateful diatribe, ad hominem attacks and shouted rhetoric don't impress.

Make an appointment to talk to your pastor.

As a general rule of thumb, a Catholic who marries outside the Church is not considered married. If there are no impediments to the marriage, a convalidation is usually fairly simple to have done. If there are impediments, it still may be possible to work through all of that fairly simply.

There is no way for us on the internet to know what your situation is. The best way to know for sure is to meet with a priest and lay everything out for him.

Holly,

Since you were married outside the Church and were Catholic at the time (I'm supposing by your post), you are not allowed to receive Communion at this time. You will need to have your marriage convalidated before you can receive any of the Sacraments.

Convalidation can be a tricky thing, though. It is not just a simple 'blessing.' Most people, including priests, do not understand that a new act of the will in consenting to marriage is required. This is because this is the first time you will actually be getting married. I prefer the term 'canonical celebration' rather than 'convalidation' because of that (following one of the Rotal judge's preferences).

Please contact your pastor to begin the process - you may be required to go through the pre-marital instructions mandated by your diocese.
