So what do you do when you mention to your husband that you need to get out, just the two of you and he listens and comes thru but...................it is the last thing on earth you want to do, but he is all excited about it?

I think you take one for the team, Elizabeth, then volunteer to plan the next date.

I hear you, Elizabeth. However, I want to remind you of the days, maybe not so long ago, when just getting out of the house to go grocery shopping without any children was a hot date.

Oh, this is going to be a "HOT" date all right. I am going to share what he plans to do and then maybe I will get some sympathy.

Now keep in mind, the humidity here right now is about 110% and it has been about 90 degrees the last two days.

He got tickets to............ the PGA. He wants me to walk around in the heat and follow some guy playing golf. Now also remember, you can not talk when you are at these things. And also remember, I am at home with 5 kids every day. Three of them are grunters. If I find someone over 3 feet tall that can talk in complete sentences, I want to talk to them.

It is going to be torture.

I don't even have the right clothes to wear to this type of thing. I did this once way back in college, hoping to meet rich guys. Even if I had found one, it would not have been worth it.

He did say we could go to dinner afterwards. I hope it is not in a hospitality tent.

On the bright side, Elizabeth, it sounds like it will be good exercise. Wear a pedometer and think about all the calories you are burning.

So clearly you need a "pre-date" date to go get some clothes. :P

Oh man. You don't think that request to help me lose weight is coming back to haunt me do you?

Now that, is a positive spin.

Um, Elizabeth, this is a Major, if it's this weekend at Oakland Hills. That's why your husband is excited. If it were the "Some Local Bank I've Never Heard Of" Open, I could understand your concern. But, getting tix to the PGA Championship is a coup!

Also, if I were you I'd get an AMEX, fast:

invited to visit the American Express Cardmember Club.
This climate-controlled pavilion features complimentary
beverages and snacks, television monitors with live

your American Express Card for complimentary access to
this facility located left of holes #8 and #12.

Elizabeth,

According to my computer your weather forecast is a high in the low 80's with humidity around 60%. That's a nice spring day. My high today will be low 90's with about 80% humidity. (those are Fahernheit temps for you Celsius folks)

So I don't want to hear about humidity.

Why doesn't your hay fever act up and you can have a sneezing fit?

So is getting a pass to visit Guantanamo. I could never understand the hordes of fans that follow pro golfers around in silence all day......just doesn't get it for me.

I understand. I've been on a golf course for a tournament once, and once was enough, but then again I'm not a golfer.

What I'm trying to communicate to Elizabeth is the idea of validating her husband's initiative here and rewarding his obvious excitement about doing something that he thought she wanted him to do, even if it's not what she would have chosen. It might be worth sweating it out (literally) to put a few deposits in the emotional bank account. If he gets the vibe that she's not very enthused about going, it could affect his willingness to take the initiative sometime in the future.

Ok, I can handle that AMEX tent and some new clothes. I will get thru this.

For now, I am going shopping.

You are right. I don't want to squelch that. I will admit, I did not have any good ideas and he did come thru. He likes golf, I like to play but not watch.

If this is the worst thing we ever have to do together, I am going to be alright...................

I'm pretty certain this would not be the LAST thing...

I know of a man who made an anniversary present to his wife, in the form of a rock climbing adventure up out of Yosemite valley. Now, HE loves climbing and practices it at the gym 2 or 3 times a week. They set out of a March morning in shorts and tees, and having gotten up were faced with a serious possibility of having to remain outdoors overnight, this is above 6000 feet.

Your outing would not be high up on your list, I realize, but it can't be the LAST thing really. It has no prospect of leaving your children motherless or fatherless...

I liked the suggestion made, enjoy the golf and offer to plan the next date to reciprocate...

Nike Golf, Adidas and others all have "dri-fit" clothes, and they drape nicely, too!

Oh Elizabeth, I hope you enjoy yourself! Some of the best dates I have been on with hubby (and even before hubby was on the scene - ahem!) have been the ones I was looking forward to least! And they have turned out to be excellent fun.

Probably the best one was going to see a Rugby League match (different rules to Rugby Union - not the code that I prefer!) on a Sunday in November. It was cold. It was raining. The ground was exposed to an icy wind which felt like it was coming directly from the polar ice cap with nothing stopping it, and by half time you couldn't tell which team was which for the muddy shirts. However, I was in a group of fervent supporters for one side, who answered all my daft questions and kept me warm with a constant supply of hot chocolate! It was great. My date and I had to run from the bus stop to the University Chaplaincy though to make Sunday evening Mass!! I remember I had to lead the congregation in the first hymn still out of breath from my running!

Besides, I can think of worse dates than walking around a beautifully manicured park looking at nature (which even with guys whacking small white balls with sticks in the background, it will be!). My husband wanted to take me to a role playing and war games convention. I politely excused myself from that one!!! I can only take one for the team so far!!

You are not going to believe this............I have nothing to complain about!!

I had a really good time. It is amazing what a good attitude, new clothes and a few drinks from the AMEX tent will do for you. Now I will admit, that for the first hour or two I felt like a fish out of water. It is kind of a snobby little affair. I did not like the guys that kept "shushing" the people. I kept taking it personally. The movie "Happy Gilmore" kept running thru my mind.

Then I got into it. I decided I could not just follow people around all day. I needed a bad guy and a good guy.

I found a few bad guys right away. Then I found a golfer that had a Detroit Lions shirt on and a Detroit Lions visor. His name was Ben Curtis. I had my man to cheer for. I found out later that he has a deal with the NFL that he will wear whatever the home town team is. That's ok. I heard he is a huge football fan. He can't be too bad.

There is a moral to this story. A date is a date is a date. If you can get out with your spouse, you should do it (unless he wants you to climb a mountain). Those opportunities do not come along very often.

Yay!

Which proves that it's not where you go or what you do but rather with whom you do it.

I'm so glad you had fun, I thought about you when I saw it on the news last night! Any time you get something new to wear and a few hours with your husband is a good time, right?

Elizabeth,

I'm so pleased for you, that you had a good time.

My wife and I sort of trade off preferences for our dates. I go to plays because she loves them so much, and to some films I wouldn't have chosen. She comes to classical music performances because I love them so much. It seems to work.

It does seem to work out well...

Just an update..........my guy, that I picked to win the very first day based solely on his attire......was in a race to the finish and came in 2nd place.

I should have wagered a win, place or show.

Ah, young Sergio Garcia, the pride of Spain, who missed a five footer for birdie on 17 after Harrington had drained his longer putt and thereby failed again to win his first major title.

He could arguably be the new "BPWHWAM" (Best player who hasn't won a major).

Incidentally, Padraig Harrington in the first European player to win the PGA Championship since Tommy Armour in 1930.

My guy was actually Ben Curtis. The one wearing the Lions garb. I just tuned in to see if my guy was still in it and he was!! There was a tie for 2nd place.

I like that Sergio though. He has a lot of emotion for a golfer. He made it more interesting to watch.( I did want him to shave though) Did you see the one where he hit it about 175 yards and it bounced in and out of the cup? That had to hurt.

I am just wondering, does that Harrington ever blink?

:) First of all and most importantly, wear some very good walking shoes. You will put in some miles. Wear some thick, short, cotton socks with those tennis shoes. I did see one guy with white socks and sandals. I would not recommend that, he kept getting stared at.

I did go and buy a sleeveless, collared golf shirt. I was trying to avoid that farmer tan. And in all seriousness, those wicking, dry fiber threads really do work. Plus, I looked cool.

Wear shorts with pockets. Sometimes you are just standing there and it is dead quiet and just don't know what to do with your hands, so you need pockets to stick them in. You also need those pockets to put tons of money in because everything there costs one million dollars. Take your own water in. Trust me. $6 water does not taste any better than .25 cent water.

And..........if you really want to fit in, wear a visor. I don't get the visor thing. I just like sunglasses but visors were all the rage. Apparently it is also cooler if it says, Taylor Made or Callaway on the visor. You have a better chance of being able to afford the visor than the club, but no one will be the wiser.
