When posting, do not reveal another person's sins or alleged sins. The church teaches us that we do not have the right to disclose someone's faults and failings to someone who does not have the need to know about them.

If you need to discuss a sinful matter, do it in a way that you do not reveal the identity of the person that you are referring to. Even if you use a pseudonym on the forum, someone who knows you or just makes a good guess, can be led into sinful judgements by your words. So keep them nondescript.

In other words, asking what to do about a someone you know who is doing drugs is OK. Asking what to do about your sister who is doing drugs or mentioning that your neighbor Ed is having an affair is not acceptable.

A good rule of thumb is to remember the golden rule. Don't write anything about anyone that you woudn't want to see said about you on a public forum.

Effie,

your post reminds me of what St Ignatius of Loyola said about confession in his Spiritual Exercises

Quote:
First Week, General Examination of Conscience, Sins of Words:
Nothing should be said to defame or slander another. If I reveal a hidden mortal sin committed by another, I sin mortally. If I reveal another's hidden venial sin, I sin venially. In revealing the defects of another, I thereby make known my own defect.

Thanks for posting that useful reminder.

Please read this thread and take note.

The forum is not the place for a discussions about someone else's sins. They have a right to their privacy, and to be safe from detraction, regardless of what the person may have done, or what you think of them.

There is another thing to keep in mind as well. Hundreds of people read this forum. It's very possible that someone you know, or who knows the person you are talking about, will read what you have said. If it gets back to the person (and that has happened in the past), you are risking making the situation far worse.

And last but not least, read the quote that Chris provided in the post preceeding this one.

We will remove posts that involve airing someone's alleged dirty laundry.

This is another reminder to be careful with what you post. As Tony said on another thread:

Quote:
When posting messages it is critical not to give away identities which can harm another person's reputation.

Regardless of what you might think of that other person, they have a right to their good name and to be safe from sinful Detraction.

It's time to bring this thread back into public view. The contents of this thread are not only for this section - they are for the entire forum.

Judging by the date on this post, I am clearly behind in 'the news!'

I cannot believe that people would use this forum as a 'gossip' forum!!

For what its worth, (everyone) there are 'lessons' and teachings from St Paul on such matters. Suffice to say, I would heed Effie's and Tony's (in another thread) guidance! DON'T DO IT!

To speak of someone else's faults, is judgemental! To speak of it to a third party is gossiping! (A favoured tool of that idiot with the horns!)

If you require advise, seek it in the appropriate manner from the appropriate sources; beit civil, or spiritual.

Sure, I am certain there are good 'counsellors' present in this forum, but seriously, on something as grave as your marriage, a sacrament, do you think and value it so little that you would 'air' your problems so frivolously??

Love! Wisdom! Patience! Tolerance! Patience! Wisdom! Love!

"You must place your spouse before ALL others; mother, father, brother, sister, even your children! For you have chosen her/him to be your companion through life!" That is your intent from the outset!
(A very wise man!)

That it may not ALWAYS work out is irrelevant!

With God's guidance, always.

Marty
